Free Samples: Ultra-Thick Layered Snares

Ultra Thick Layered Snares (by StrangeFlow)
So, I was working on a sample pack the other day, and was fixing up to cut some high-powered snare samples (each with an ultra-trill indexing of 1000% percent) and I noticed that there was a dozen or two snares in the pack that had a certain… “ultra-thick/layered” sound to them.

Instead of keeping them for the original sample pack, I thought to my myself, “StrangeFlow, why not give these away in a special ‘Ultra Thick Layered Snares’ package? Come on, just do it, nerd!”

So, that’s what I did. These snare sounds are ultra thick, ultra sick, processed – and then layered – with sounds from a variety of sources, including the 808 drum machine, the TR 68, the 606, the 909, and even the Cheetah MD16 ( a real rarity of a drum machine – it’s got some really fun electric cowbells!)… I took a range of sounds from these machines, including snares, claps, cowbells, toms, bongo’s, kicks, etc; I carefully, methodically, and stylistically smashed them into each other in a way that makes these ‘snare’ sounds really colorful and thick. They’re sick as sick can be. I feel like some of these sounds would be perfect for a glitch hop tune, or something more chill like a J Dilla-style beat… or Flying Lotus / Samiyam… Something along the lines of some hip-hoppish-ness, where you’re trying to really let your breaks shine, and you really want to show off your stylish snares (cuz it’s always – ALWAYS good to be able to brag ’bout your snares..)

Anyway, so click here to download these 21 snares…

But just remember: with statistical analysis, I have concluded that these snare sounds definitely have an ultra-trill indexing of about 1000%, so be careful.

With great power comes great responsibility…

Top Ten Footwork Jungle Trax!

Posted by StrangeFlow on May 9, 2013
Posted in: Top Ten Lists. Tagged: best jungle footwork songs, footwork jungle, top ten jungle footwork, whats the best footwork jungle song. Leave a comment

TopTen- bassadelic's footwork-jungle (compiled by strangeflow)

There have been a slew of incredible tunes to come out lately in a new strain of music known as footwork jungle. Or jungle footwork. Whatever. The point is, it marries the speed and styistically-choppy vocal edits, the 808s and ghetto musical aesthetics of Chicago juke…to the speed, breakbeats, ravey pads and structures of jungle. The end result is a 160 beats per minute nightmare of excitement. Yea, that’s right, a ‘nightmare of excitement,’ I said it. Said what we were all thinking…

Anyway, the point is, it’s a very new style, and as such, I’e been seeing all kinds of labels prop up in the last couple of months. You’re starting to see all sorts of jungle footwork releases coming out, with label serial #’s that end in ‘001,’ representing the label’s first release. In other words, it’s an exciting time. Folks are catching on. People are getting organized. Emails are being sent. Plans are being developed. Flags are being hoisted. Bras are being burned. It’s an exciting time! More exciting than dubstep, the Beatles, and some kind of awesome Mexican lunch buffet all rolled into one! Fuck yea, more exciting than any Step Beatles Buffet!! The 160 is making it’s way back to the rave!

Here’s ten incredible footwork jungle trax I want to lay on yah! Enjoy!

10… Codename John – Dreams of Heaven (Mark Kloud Edit – clip)

Found this guy after he posted on theDynasty Shit (record label) submissions page over on soundcloud… This guy’s originals are dope, and his mixes are even doper-er-er. You gotta check some of those out… *I almost made this top ten a ‘top ten footwork jungle mixtapes,’ but decided to go for original tunes… that’ll have to be the next one.. But – I am pleased to announce that Mark Kloud IS going to be releasing music on Dynasty Shit soon, so that should be a lot of fun!

9… Fracture – Bad Habit (Om Unit VIP)

Om Unit is a bad ass producer, and is actually one of the original founders of the beautifully-mutated strain of music we call jungle-footwork.. (or footwork-jungle, or jungle-juke, or.. whatever… Hey, let’s be honest, here, at very least, footwork jungle is an organic and logical name – and it’ll probably stay that way until someone thinks of something cooler (which isn’t exactly necessary, but could happen) OR, more likely, when NME decides to re-brand it as something like… “Dubstep 2,” or, “JungleFoot,” or, “SpeedHouse,” or something equally dumb… Yea, those are all dumb names, but over-zealous and untalented music critics changed jungle to drum’n’bass, and they do that kinda thing all the time.. Not that this is exactly relevant, but thought I’d bring this up. Yea, just watch – music critics will have a field day with it, sooner or later..)

8… FishStix – OriginalMurdah

Another badass tune here… Fishstix has been blowing up the juke for a little while now, and his new Junglework EP is now available. A lot of this dude’s stuff goes hardcore as fuck, which I really enjoy.. He puts the ARDKORE into the ONESIXTY!

7… Phokus & Grapes – Ballers

A fun little tune, which gets pretty damn trappin’. Fine juke, to be certain, with some real DnB-style rhythmic elements. The vocals are fun as hell, too. B-b-b-b-b-b-b-ballahs, playas, pimps, crackheads, and racist-ass cops!

6… ASC – Karma (Chrissy Murderbot Remix)

A remix by Chirssy Murderbot of an old ASC track. You might notice by now, if you haven’t already, that there are a range of different techniques and styles that go into this kind of music… Some lean closer to jungle and some closer to the ghetto house side of juke and footwork. In the end, it’s all just good music, but I definitely think it’s interesting to hear different artists perspectives coming at this new genre. For a junglist douche like me it’s exciting. Shits like bing AND bang.

5… Sinistarr – Ross

A banger from Sinistarr off of the Loose Squares label. I gotta say I normally hate/absolutely-loathe/simply-can’t-stand Rick Ross (not the real one, but the imposter who took Rick Ross’ name and started rapping….) BUT this track REALLY demonstrates the best possible use of the dude’s vocals. He makes them palatable. To do that, have to say Sinistarr must be some kind of twisted and maniacal footwork genius. Ha.

4… Fishstix – MusicIsaMission

On the more chill / soulful / delicious pad tip of things, here’s MusicIsaMisson by Fishstix. Though it’s more of a chiller, that definitely doesn’t mean it’s any less fast In fact, with some of the fuckaroundish breakbeats, it almost sounds faster than a lot of stuff I’ve heard so far. Thus, the beauty of this new music – it can be hardcore / fast AND vibrant / soulful. What more could you want?

3… REMARC – DRUM N BASS WISE [R.A.W. iz dat footwork? RMX by 6Blocc]

6Blocc resurrected this old Remarc jem of a gam and gave it a facelift. Very enjoyable!

2… Manni Dee & Deft – Jungle Jook

Can’t really get my head around how few views this one has… Seriously, it’s awesome. But, sometimes even really dope tracks that get tons of plays in one place don’t always get a ton of plays somewhere else. Ah, the internets. Anyway, this one’s a good one, too. And, like the # 1 track I selected, it’s from Youtube. So, the consistency of having-all-soundcloud-audio players in this post is now all fucked up… Sorry.. But not really.. Anyway, Manni Dee and Deft really kill it with this one. One of the first tracks of this style that I ever heard, actually.

1… Remarc – R.I.P (Philip D Kick’s Remix)

This one is dynamite. I couldn’t find it on soundcloud so I went straight to youtube. It’s an anthem. Philip D Kick really set it off with his compilations of remixes he did of old jungle tunes. So, you might say he’s the Kurt Cobain of footwork jungle. HA! Only joking of course! (Kurt Cobain was a douchebag who never really invented anything – Philip D Kick actually experimented and came up with something new and fun ) You can get his mixes online, they’re out there, and they’re free. He’s apparently stopped making juke’d out jungle remixes though… But the damage has already been done. His rhythmic formula has taken root like a virus, and in a matter of time it’ll be all over the place. Hopefully, it won’t get as annoying as dubstep… Something tells me it won’t though.

My regret, with this post, is that I’ve been really enjoying these sounds a LOT lately (it’s almost all of what I’ve been listening to) but I know there’s a lot more out there that I haven’t heard yet… Plus, ten tracks is really too small of a number. I’m almost certainly going to have to do a ‘top ten footwork jungle trax – PART 2 !’ or something.. AH, and the mixtapes! There are SO MANY good ones! :) Ah, but anywho… I hope you enjoyed this post. I know I did :) Spending some time chillin’ out and selecting my favorite jungle footwork tunes is definitely a fun thing to do…

Kid Lib Interview !!!

Posted by StrangeFlow on May 7, 2013
Posted in: FREE!!!, Interviews, New Music. Leave a comment

StrangeFlow - I got to pick the mind of one of the most prolific pioneers in the emerging game of footwork jungle music!

So, Kid Lib is an electronic musician who has been bombing the scene lately with his insane jungle footwork mixtapes ( like the one he contributed to Bassadelic.com just a couple weeks ago) – but not only does he drop dope bass-bombs, he also makes his own tunes. TONS of them. No, really – he is EXTREMELY prolific, records an ungodly amount of music, and if when he actually puts something new on his soundcloud, whatever you’re hearing is the best track of literally hundreds that didn’t make the cut. THAT’S how prolific he is.

I was able to interview this Sheffield music producer, and I picked his brain as much as possible. I hope you enjoy! It’s an interview I’m very happy with. Turned out well :) Thanks again for taking the time, Kid Lib!

Below is the mixtape he did for Bassadelic.com, Kid Lib – Smokin Trees Mixtape (Juke&Jungle)
**free to download, btw. Click the buy link to not-buy this awesome tape**

So, listen to some good trax as ya read an awesome interview :)

StrangeFlow: So I really dig your music, I’ve been really getting into juke, and once I discovered there were artists going into the juke / jungle sound, I flipped my fucking lid! I was so excited. What brought you to this new hybrid sound? Are there very many other folks doing it?

Kidlib: When it comes to the juke side of things, I must admit, I’m fairly new to it. I’d say I discovered it within the last year. It was definitely a “different” sound, and it had me intrigued pretty immediately; although, I think the first crossover I heard was actually a while before I discovered the genre. I had heard the Phillip D Kick (Om Unit) – R I P Remix and didn’t realize that there was a genre full of stuff like it.

I loved the way it refreshed the old jungle tunes without ruining them. Those classics are special to me, and it’s sad when I hear remixes of the classics that don’t do them justice (including a couple of my own) hahaha. In all seriousness, I never thought you could sample a jungle tune and create something new with it, so I found that quite impressive. There’s just so much going on in jungle tunes already I never would’ve even considered sampling one, apart from maybe a break.

It seems like it’s only really a handful of people that are creating the Juke/Jungle stuff. I’d have to point out my man Fishstix from the US at this point cos he’s all over it, and he’s got some big tunes in the bag, as well as a new release on Clash records. Most recently I’ve noticed 6Blocc joining the Juke/Jungle crossover team with a couple big remixes, one of Remarc’s ‘Drum&Bass Wise,’ and Kemet Crew’s ‘Burn it Down’, both of which are wicked. It seemed fairly easy to find artists on soundcloud getting in to it, so I recommend a dig on there.

SF: What do you think of Philip D Kick’s footwork jungle compilations? Did that influence you at all, or was it some other artist who inspired you? Or was it completely organic and natural for you to come up with mixing juke and jungle?

KL: It sort of just happened but without a doubt, Philip D Kick’s works were the first I discovered in the crossover genre. My other introduction to Juke was through Dj Spinn & Rashad mix, as well as hours of digging through soundcloud and contacting artists about tunes.

Juke has been going in Chicago for a long time, whereas the combination with Jungle seems to be a newer step, at least in the grand scheme of things.

I tend to spend most of my time on producing Old Skool style Jungle & Hip Hop (Yeah I make a lot of Hip Hop under various aliases too, but that’s a different conversation for another day haha) and in all honesty I don’t watch what’s going on with new music all that much, at least in terms of radio , tv, charts etc. I just tend to do my own thing regardless of what’s going on around me, so the Juke discovery was kind of accidental I suppose. I don’t hear much of it out, and as far as I can tell there isn’t that many DJ’s playing it (at least around here). Although I have noticed the odd Juke track dropping into Dj sets that play multiple genres more and more. The thing with juke is that it’s super fun and relatively easy to mix, and fairly basic, which means it’s easily blended with other styles and sounds, so I think we’ll be hearing it creep up quite a lot more in the future.

SF: I feel like the tempo has been steadily going up the last few years in electronic music… I remember when it went back down, after the 90s were over, but people have been increasingly more open to super-fast music. Why do you think this is? Also, what kind of feedback have you gotten about your style?

KL: I personally think the tempo is decreasing at the moment, I suppose it depends which angle you’re looking at it from. I mean Jungle and D&B have always been on the faster end of the spectrum. Drum & Bass does seem to be looking back at Jungle a bit more these days, and whilst still being faster than Jungle, it’s definitely begun to borrow elements of it’s elder again, and people seem to be more open to the slower & older sound. I think it just depends which angle you’re coming at the music from, there’s always been fast and slow music it just depends on what you discover I think.

SF: Interesting. Well, moving the topic more to your tunes…as far as your own music, what kind of feedback have you gotten from people about your own style?

KL: People seem to dig what I’m doing with the Old School style Jungle at the moment. I have had nothing but positive feedback really, even from some people I would’ve never imagined it from. So, I think, (hopefully) I’m doing something right haha.

SF: I really enjoyed your mix, humorously (though probably accurately) called, “Tracks I May or May Not Finish So Why Not Make a Mix,” do you have a lot of unfinished tracks on the backburner?

**turns out I got the name slightly wrong, but I posted it below….**
Kid Lib – The ‘I May Or May Not Finish Some Of These Beats So Why Not Make A Mixtape’ Mixtape

KL: Thanks, I’m glad you’re diggin’ the tape. Yeah, finished and unfinished, there’s so much that even I myself can’t keep track of. Every time I dig in one of my folders I find some tunes I can’t even remember making. A rough estimate would be around 200-300 finished and probably a good 1000 unfinished Jungle tunes – a lot of which will probably be lost forever and never heard – as well as about 1500 finished hip hop beats and more unfinished. Then a load of Dub & Reggae and some other random bits (and that’s only really counting from 2010 onwards). Basically, one of my friends put it best when we had a look through a couple of my beats folders. He said “it’s like an addiction that has gotten well out of hand.” I couldn’t agree more. However on the Juke side of things, I have made very little so far, maybe 10, but only properly finished the 3 on the first ep. I have more enjoyed the listening and DJing aspect of it, so I can get a real feel for the music before I dive in head first kind of thing.

I’m mainly focused on Jungle at the moment, and am working on quite a few releases. Once they’re all sorted I will most likely get on some Juke vibes again though for sure.

SF: What do you use to record most of your tracks, DAW-wise? And what is your favorite part of making a new tune?

KL: Good question, my favorite part…hmmm… I’d have to say the whole process really. From finding a sample you want to use, or getting an idea for something you want to write & record, all the way through opening up Ableton and getting started, to finishing. Although, I suppose the most satisfying point is finishing a new tune. Other than Ableton, I use Adobe Audition. I sample heavily from vinyl, especially my drums and I have also begun recording things to an old tape deck and back.

SF: Lovin the old records and casettes eh?

KL: I love the sound of vinyl and tapes, nothing compares in my opinion. Unless of course the vinyl is set up incorrectly, then of course it’s a different story. I stay well away from serato when DJing, as I find serious issues with the sound quality. I’m not sure how people don’t seem to hear it but it makes long solid bass notes judder back and forth, and there’s so many other issues with it that I’m not even going to get started on it haha. I use CDs to DJ, preferably the standard pioneer CDJ1000’s, as they seem the most reliable. I would prefer vinyl only but as I play mainly my own dubplates, or unreleased tunes when I’m playing jungle, it would be ludicrous to press 200 tunes to dubplate, although if I ever win the lottery that will be step 1 haha.

My mixtapes are mostly created on ableton as I don’t actually own any CDJ’s or turntables at the moment, although there is a few actual mixes available too. For example on mixcloud.com/kidlib. I’m in the process of trying to get a few more actual mixes recorded but for the time being mixtapes will have to do the trick.

SF: So you play live fairly often?

KL: Haha :D Yeah, I’ve been DJing for about a decade now. My first set was at Feedback. I’m currently a resident at Concrete Jungle, Pangaea, Dubcentral, Roots and Lunar in Sheffield. I have played at many other events in the Uk as well, although mostly in Sheffield. I will hopefully be getting a passport sorted out soon which will allow me to travel places to DJ, which, although the invitations have been there, I have not been able to do yet. I’d definitely love to travel to some other countries to play and have a rave up!

SF: Sound like you’re a busy dude, but sounds like you’re having some fun, especially with some of the newer strains of music..

KL: Well, like I say, I don’t pay too much attention to what people are doing and what they think is popular or good or whatever. I mainly focus on bringing back the sound of the 90’s whilst not being completely blind to more recent production techniques, sounds & styles. I just feel that music has in general lost a lot of it’s feeling and soul, so that is my main aim, to bring some of that back.

Jungle has always been underground music, and to be honest, I think that at least to some degree, it should stay that way. There isn’t many people still flying the flag but those that are… are passionate about it, for the reason that it is different, underground, and has (over the last 20 years) remained relatively unscathed by any other music, or popularity . I think if it became popular it would change the entire sound and vibe that we are trying to retain, therefore losing it’s entire essence. Having said that, I would of course love it to be popular as it is, in it’s true form, I just don’t see that as very likely.

SF: Word, I can understand that… So, something I was wondering, back to your music, is, uh…well, how the hell do you have time to do a thousand tunes when you’re a resident DJ at so many places? Goddamn you’re busy! Motherfucker do you sleep??

KL: Haha, sleep, I’m pretty sure I’ve done that a couple times. Here and there, it’s overrated really…

SF: Ha.

KL: Honestly my sleep pattern is ludicrous. Most recently I’ve been sleeping maybe 4-5 hours a day between mid day and 5. It may be crazy – but I’m at my most productive after midnight.

**another tune by Kid Lib**
Kid Lib & Percussive P – Sorry For The Delay On The Ep, Here’s A Freebie While You Wait :)

KL:As for the residencies, none of them are more than once a month so it tends to work out perfectly :)

SF: Ah, ok. Well, man, I really dig the Smoking Trees Mixtape you did! Thanks for that. I hope to hear more of the jungle footwork (or jungle juke, or juke jungle, or whatever the fuck it’s going to be called, haha)…

KL: Cheers man, glad you dig it. I’m sure you will be hearing more, I’ll probably be making some in the not too distant future, and I think more and more folks are getting involved, so I definitely see it becoming bigger yet. For now all my focus is on our new label Green Bay Wax, but once that is well underway, I’ll most likely get on some more jukey stuff.

SF: Word. Hey, I was also curious, considering the vibes of some of your tunes I’ve listened to – did you ever get much into breakcore? I hear it in some of your music, but that’s probably just me being hopeful? ;)

KL: Hmm…as far as breakcore, never really been that into it. I did like the faster more “crazy” I guess sound when I was younger and just getting in to it all, but over the years I’ve come to like my Jungle a little slower, with a more rhythmical, danceable vibe – and of course huge basslines. It is all about the basslines :)

SF: Ah ok. Yea, maybe I was being hopeful… Always trying to spot breakcore glitches and influences when maybe it’s not as relevant right now as it used to be….Well anyway….as far as some of the sounds and samples in your trax – where do you find your samples from? Straight up old vinyl? or breaks- mp3z? Was curious about that, man. Everyone has a different source for sampling, it seems.

KL:The best way is to find your own source. If everyone had the same it would quickly become stale, as it has, to me at least, in some cases of sample cd’s. Not to name any specific names but most producers will probably twig which ones I’m referring to when it comes to recent drum & bass or “Jungle” sample CDs, which by the way if you’re looking for old school jungle samples are pretty much all useless, there I’ve said it haha.

Find and create samples wherever possible, from whatever possible, use whatever tools you have in hand. Use your imagination. Personally, I sample quite a lot from vinyl and tape. However, I don’t really limit myself, although, saying that, listen up folks: sampling from youtube is a BIG no no! If your ears can’t tell it sounds hideously awful, at least stop making my ears go through the agony of hearing it :P Using low quality samples will get you a low quality result.

It’s that simple.

KL: Personally, I dig for samples that have a bit of crackle or dust on them, I crave that sound, I don’t eq it out, if anything I eq it in haha. To sum it up i suppose I would say sample EVERYTHING, don’t limit yourself, the only one that creates boundaries for you is you. Just make sure that you’re using the highest quality you can find to begin with, as it will make the outcome so much better… Because, as they say, you can’t polish a turd, you can throw sparkles on it, but it will still stink :D

SF: Agreed. Straight up youtube sampling never seems to turn out as well as hoped for… So, thanks a lot for the interview, man. You got any shoutouts for everyone? As well as info and websites to drop on the world?

KL: Gotta send some big ups to all the Green Bay Wax Fam, Concrete Jungle/ 7Hill Soldier/ Pangaea Possee, Dubcentral, Roots, Lunar, and all the other sound systems, promoters, organizers and ravers. Anyone that’s not mentioned, or I’ve forgotten, you too! Everyone that is supporting my music obviously (an extra special thanks to you :D)

And each an every junglist and junglette! Hold Tight! :D
A: Well, first I’d have to point people towards my bandcamp (kidlib.bandcamp.com) where you can download a bunch of tunes (I think there’s around 40-50 tunes on there now) some are free, some are for sale.

For the second stop, I would have to point people towards Kid Lib where I upload previews, mixtapes, the occasional freebie, people can keep up to date by following, and can get in touch with me via the comments or private message.
I’m starting a strictly old school style jungle label, called Green Bay Wax, and the team so far consists of Mr Sensi, Tim Reaper, Dwarde, Percussive P and myself. The first ep will be the Kid Lib & Percussive P ep, consisting of 4 tracks on vinyl and 3 digital tracks, which will only be available with the vinyl. We’re hoping to get it out in the next couple months, so keep your eyes peeled as this will be a limited run. It will be available from greenbaywax.bandcamp.com, discogs or directly from me through soundcloud, email etc as soon as it’s ready for pre order.

Motivation Loops (vs. One Shots) & How they Relate to Psychological Conditioning in Music Production

Motivation Loop vs. One Shots (a chapter from StrangeFlow's New Ebook, 'Guerrilla Blueprints for Creative Passive Income'

This chapter is sampled from the new ebook, written by StrangeFlow, Guerilla Blueprints for Creative Passive Income, available now for just a few bucks! It’s great for helping generate income ideas as a musician or DJ. It’s not a great-rich-quick book, and it won’t encourage you to become a douchey sell-out who’s only making art-for-profit, but it WILL help you come up with clever and inventive new ways to help pay the rent with your artistic talents (and feel fucking good about it, too).

It also includes a variety of tips and techniques for getting your craft going in the studio. One of the chapters is about motivation loops vs. one shots, as they apply to your attitude in the studio (and not just actual audio one-shots and loops). So I decided to include this chapter here, for this free post, for you guys to check out :)

Enjoy!

Bass kicks, snares, hats, and my personal favorite: the 808 cowbell – they’re all one-shot drum samples.
One shots don’t typically last very long. On a sequencer, you see them spaced out between one another, unless you turn them into a loop. A loop is prolonged and continuous, and contains anything you trigger to potentially play over and over.

Most people have motivation like a one-shot drum sample; that is, it’s a burst, a boom, a snap… and then nothing, until they get another one-shot of motivation going – and then burn out once more, etc…
My point is, what you want, in terms of drive, is something more sustained – a loop of motivation that you can focus on, and keep striving and working hard with, for as long as necessary. This is one of the main differences between musicians that develop successful careers and meaningful creations consistently – and artists who try really hard for a little while and then give up too quickly.

Motivation can come in many forms. I think the trick is to find something to inspire and motivate you that is likely to last a long time. If you enjoy making songs and tunes and remixes and it’s a pastime for you, something you do to unwind, then that can actually be a pretty great motivator for you – or at very least, a great motivator to getting you into the studio to begin with, which is the biggest hurdle to conquer.

There are obviously exceptions, but a lot of people don’t attain the things they want because they don’t try to do the things they really want to do, and they don’t try these things because they’re afraid to fail, and so they never end up starting the project in the first place. Starting your journey is the most important step, but keeping the journey going is also one of the most important steps possible. So kick up the sustain lever on your loops!
There are many different techniques, motivations, and inspirational ideas out there to help you keep the sustain knob turned all the way up. Some folks find that competition motivates them (the fact that sports are so fucking popular proves that) and other folks find that the mere drive to outdo themselves is motivation enough to keep you striving.

What motivates you now might change with time, for example, I know there are a lot of folks who get into DJing specifically because they think they’ll be a lot cooler and get laid a lot more. Now, while there’s nothing wrong with being cool and getting laid, usually the folks who are only concerned with that don’t end up sticking with it very long; something else will come along, and they’ll gravitate towards that. They’ll likely get bored with the DJ thing, or with failing to “get big” overnight…

“Getting big” is also one of those ideas that can be defined in many different ways, from personal achievement, to world glory, and everything in between – in fact, MOSTLY somewhere in between.

Similar to what inspires you, your goals will likely change over time, but it can help to have an idea where you want to go, and then figure out how to inspire and motivate yourself to get there.
I truly feel that inspiration is not something that you have to just wait for, as if it’s about to fall in your lap, randomly. If you cultivate a creative-minded lifestyle and learn to see how fascinating life is, all around you, you will have a much easier time “finding” inspiration in the studio. I also don’t believe you have to get high to find inspiration (though, at times, it definitely doesn’t hurt) but I think whatever internal forces are guiding you to keep going and keep trying harder, you should try to recognize them consciously, and try to pull as much energy from these forces as humanly possible, and focus them on whatever musical or artistic project you are working on. Concerning the “Sustaining the Loop” method, go back, again and again, and reconsider all of the ideas, forces, and goals that keep you hungry and keep you going. This will not only keep you focused for right now, but in the future as well – when you run out of steam and want to give up, you’ll consciously retain logical and/or emotional reasons to push yourself to passionately keep striving as long as possible.

Think like a champion. Would a champion give up when things get difficult? Fuck no! The champion would press on harder, until every last ounce of strength from their body has drained out and onto the floor.

Would a champion allow doubt to creep in? Sure, for a minute; but upon realizing that doubts concerning ambition are usually emotional and fear-based, they can destroy them with consistent logic and persistently reminding oneself of the end goals in mind.

Everyone has doubts, and if they say they don’t, they’re either crazy or they’re just fucking lying. It’s OK to have doubts, but don’t allow yourself to let these useless thoughts suck out your energy or mooch your time away and leave you to go back to the couch and watch tv, or go listen to some other champion’s music instead of making your own (obviously I’m not saying you should never listen to music someone else made, I’m just talking about listening to someone else’s music whilst giving up on your own).

So, overall, some of the big ideas here are to initialize and maintain constant motivation loops of which you will consciously and consistently check and re-check and re-re-check-check, over and over. This process is made easier by having them written down. It’s a great idea to not only keep them written down, but also scan them, every morning, as well as before you’re about to spend time on your newest major creative project – and whatever the project may be, you should consider it major.

Why?

Well, because it’s good to think big, but it’s even better to think HUGE, and that’s just how champions think! Every new project you embark upon, therefore, is a major project.

In your notebook (remember, this post is taken from the new StrangeFlow Ebook, so it references a notebook which you might not have on-hand… A word document or notepad document is also fine…) write out ten things that inspire you to want to be creative, under a headline that reads, “Ten Reasons to Create.” On the next page, write out, “Ten Reasons to Work Hard,” which will include any and every reason you can think of (so, obviously, it’s not limited to just ten items) that have kept you working in the past.

This one might be easier than you realize. Have you ever held a job in the past that you weren’t fond of? Why did you keep working on those days that you wanted to throw in the towl? Writing down, “because I had to pay the rent,” is acceptable (and, to be honest, most people will write that down as one of their first reasons). After you get down the page a little bit, you’ll start to realize that some of the later items on your list might not have been obvious to you from the get-go. When you need these lists to help you out in the future, you might only need to look at one item on just one of these lists to get you going. If you get to the tenth item and you can’t think of any more reasons for your “Work Hard” list, you might just write something with funk and flair, like, “…Because that’s just one a fucking champion does!” Who knows – you might just look at it one day, and think, “Hell yea, this is what a champion fucking does,” and you’ll get right to work!

Your reasons can be anything you can think of, from vanity-soaked indulgences such as, “World glory,” to OCD reasons like, “If I don’t constantly work on something, I’ll go stir crazy and start smoking cigarettes again… Sigh…” It’s OK to have an odd and highly-personalized list, and there’s no specific reason I can think of to show anyone this list, ever. You might even have something on your list like, “…To become extremely successful, so (insert name here) will regret insulting me by telling me that, (insert insult here) when I’m world famous in ten years, and he/she is still (insert extremely unappealing and painfully menial profession here)…”
You get the idea.

Whatever works, works.

Plus, as I stated earlier, you can make a new list later, if you feel that your previous lists of reasons have grown inadequate over time. If you stick with it for years and years, you will find that your top ten reasons will change, and again, that’s completely fine, and quite natural, too.

Again, it is also extremely important to try to keep in mind what your goals are, as this will be the third list: “Ten Goals To Reach.”

If you’ve already had experience in the past working on creative projects, these lists should all be easier for you, but it’s completely fine if you haven’t. You have to start somewhere, and this is something that will definitely help you. You’re physically growing the part of your brain responsible for your increased ambition. Plus, doing things like this have to work – it’s basic math: keep a loop sustained, and it will go infinitely further than a simple one-shot.

Let the others be fuckin’ one-shots…

What’s up, MAY!?!

It's May here @ Bassadelic!!

What’s up! A new month is here! Finally, another full-length month (I always am uneccessarily irritated by months with less than 31 days..) and that means it’s time for a bunch of brand new content from Bassadelic dot com.

Lots of exciting things have been going on here, and I’ve been getting up to a lot of projects lately.

The Dynasty Shit label is about to have it’s first AND SECOND release, very soon! Look out for some incredible footwork-jungle material. VERY soon!!! The first release is either going to be the Dynasty Shit Compilation, with a variety of fine musicians, or an EP by 5ifty$ix K, with an old modem’s worth of delicious beats!

Also, some good tutorials are planned – and a new sample pack is going to come out this month. What is it? Ooooh, you’ll see – but I’ll tell you one thing, it will be a sample pack to complete the trap-pack trilogy initiated a few months back.

Also, started a new forum for juke producers and fans. Very excited about that, as there are already a lot of very good people over there, chatting it up and offering some high-quality music for everyone! Should continue to be a blast!

There’s also an interview with KidLib coming out in the next couple of days. I’ve planned some real fun stuff for Bassadelic this month, and I hope you enjoy consuming it and learning from it as much as I enjoyed creating it :)

Alright, well that’s it for now. Thanks for reading.. Now, for no reason at all, I will leave you with this image of a woman with StrangeFlow records on her boobs…

sexy b&w woman with StrangeFlow records on breasts, clearly she's a Bassadelic fan!

Juke Music Forum – a New HQ for all things Footwork-related!

StrangeFlow just set up the 'Juke Music Forum'
StrangeFlow recently started up Juke Music Forum to give juke/footwork/ghetto dance/jungle-juke producers/etc a place to go to discuss new tracks, show off new tunes, learn new musical techniques, and generally shoot the shit about juke music.

It was started about two weeks ago, and there’s already some really fun stuff going on over at JMF. Though since it’s a new forum, the site does go and off due to traffic, but that should be taken care of pretty soon… (Remember when Dubstep forum started? Yea, that first month was a mess…)

So anyway, if you’re a fan of this style of music, or a DJ / producer, or just a curious onlooker, feel free to sign up and join in the conversation. So far it’s a really great crowd, and StrangeFlow’s number one rule (which appears on the introductory post in the general tab) is, simply, “don’t be a cunt.” Every forum should be so lucky. For the time being, it looks like the rule is holding pretty soundly.
