If you don’t know what funky Worm is, please listen to the video just below.. It’s one of the most sampled tracks in hip hop. It provided as much to the G-Funk sound as P-Funk did.
Goofy little tune. I simply hate the vocals! Ha. Though, to be fair, I don’t think the Ohio Players had ANY idea how big or useful this tune would prove itself to be, years later.
Even if you’re not a fan of all the songs or artists on this list, it really shows how a few seconds of music can actually provide the backdrop for an entire genre that might emerge a decade or two later; for such a unique sound, early 90s rappers sure got a lot of range out of it.
Makes you wonder what other short samples of sound can provide the source material for an entire style of music. Well, maybe it doesn’t make you wonder, but it makes me wonder… Some other good examples are the Funky Drummer beat by James Brown, the Amen Loop, just to name a couple of examples.
I would also like to note that sooner or later, musicians started incorporating their own original synthesized renditions of the high pitched ‘Worm’ sound into their music. A good example is the Chronic Intro with Dr. Dre and Snoop.
So here we go! Top Ten songs to feature that hi-pitched ‘funky-worm’ whistle.
