2016; the Year in Music… (An Article Captured from the Futurrrrrrrre)

2015-and-2016-in-electronic-music

Welly, welly, well. As it turned out, Bassadelic.com has A WHOLE FUCKING LOT MORE hidden up it’s sleeves than anyone ever anticipated… Aside from being the head of an audio firm / electronic music blog, StrangeFlow (aka 5ifty$ix K… aka ME ….Will…) is also an author, and a time travel pioneer.

Yes, it’s true… A future article from Bassadelic was released today, and it’s from the lofty year of 2016. Yes, May 4th, 2016, to be exact. Aye! How is this possible? Never underestimate blogs, dear reader! The physics of such a time travelling apparatus have a lot to do with particle acceleration, the hyper-layer, fotons and futons… Needless to say, I do not currently wish to turn this article into a 3,100-paged text book on the exciting science (and weird sexual art) of time-travellery…

The point being, this here’s an article from exactly two years in the future. I chose today to release it, as, well, exactly two years in the future there is a lofty article about the state of music around the world being published. So, without further ado…

2016; the year in music…

Readers and viewers of holographic-auto-reading-super-robots, rejoice! Twas a great couple of years for electronic music!

So what made the end of 2014, the bulk of 2015, and the start of 2016 so beautiful? Well, if you will indulge a gentle cyborg such as myself, I would like to tell you…

The world economy got a lot better. Not perfect, but a hell of a lot better. Global warming is finally on the decline, country-EDM turned out to be a passing trend that died out a few months after it started, and Dewey DB won a nobel peace prize for his work in quantum physics!

Chicago juke, footwork, footwork jungle, and all forms of hardcore footwork breakcore madness continued to rise in popularity around the globe! 5ifty$ix K, obviously, turned out to be the top contender, releasing so many records that a new numerical / medal category had to be introduced; that of, ‘hyper-platinum.’ What a goddamn terrible and awesome hero that Will guy must be!! Hyper-platinum, eh? (Now who’s the fucking loser, internets?!) ….

Uh, yes, but aside from hyper-platinum selling recording-artist 5ifty$ix K, what else happened?

Artists like ‘Ruby my Dear,’ stole many a show, along with Venetian Snares, too. ‘Big Beat,’ – a term used to describe the music of artists such as Fatboy Slim, came back into vogue for a moment, with an incredible second wave that shocked the industry.

What about hip hop? Did hip hop die? Fuck no! It’s fucking hip hop, of course it’s still around! Hip hop leaned far away from the sounds of Drake and Kanye, getting fairly psychedelic and sample-heavy, taking on a pretty sizeable influence from mid-90s rap music. Ah, it was fun! Gritty, and yet modern… Almost jazzy, in some ways… Loopy and cutty as fuck, too… The sounds of Dilla became a big inspiration, as underground rap quickly became mainstream, as well as reinvigorating what it deemed, ‘Bad Wonky,’ or, better yet, ‘Gangsta Wonk.’

Speaking of gangsta, jazz music got gansta as FUCKING POSSIBLE. All those bland jazz stations really got their scrotums squeezed out and tied into a knot when Jazz Man B introduced his take on conventional jazz music, releasing an album that contained 4,100 re-interpretations of old jazz tunes! Apparently, a couple of years ago, Sony put the content from thousands of Blu-ray discs onto a cassette tape and this really opened the doors for hyper-prolific super-artists such as Jazz Man B. But to say that he ‘remixed’ those old tunes doesn’t quite do it justice. What Jazz Man B created was a new musical technique…

He pioneered a technology to take old songs, and automatically change the instruments used in those old tunes… Needless to say, it revolutionized EVERYTHING. People immediately had a field day, re-interpreting all sorts of music, from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix (re-electrifying old Hendrix guitar improvisations into that weird electric-banjo/flute hybrid instrument, the, ‘banjalute,’) and this process created a new form of ‘mashup/sample’ technique called post-instrumentalising, or, to use the slang of 2015, “skrapping.”

Aside from skrapping the notes of old Johnny Cash songs and replacing them with battle-scratch sounds from Q-Bert, another interesting phenomenon took place…
Afrohouse became a definite force in popular dance music – with the sounds of kwaito, townhouse funk, and hiplife, and desert blues spreading all throughout the West. As well, Africa is on its way to becoming an economic power house, hosting several of its own ‘Silicon-Valley-style’ tech cities.

Another monumental step in music was one of feminism; in huge numbers, women got to the top of the charts like never before, as the gender gap in music quickly came to a close. Fed up with the overly-testosterone-drivin nonsense of brostep, many musicians began making music that, once again, didn’t suck. It VERY MUCH did not suck, in fact: it was awesome!!! Female MCs ‘conquered,’ hip hop on the charts, with the Hip Hop Billboard 100 charts owing 57 of it’s most popular contributions to women. As well, in 2015, at least half of the festival headliners were female. Ah, 2015 was a hell of a year for equality.

Also, gay marriage was made completely legal everywhere. And marijuana? Well, I don’t even have to tell you what happened to that :) :) :) :)

Aside from all that, I won’t get into much of the weirder political things that happened at the end of 2015, such as those aliens that communicated to us all through a series of high-frequency hyper-colors… Nor will I indulge you with the horror stories of hoverboards gone wrong, because I’m sure you’ve heard enough of all that bullshit by now… And what else can be said, at this point?
But one other interesting thing that happened in music, beyond what I’ve already told you, was a development in house music…

Obviously, as has been stated and thoroughly backed up on this blog, is the notion that house music can never truly die. Aside from Afrobeat and African house influences, ‘New Jersey Lean,’ or, ‘Lean House,’ came into vogue. Don’t want to dance to footwork? Wanna get too high and chill out? Just turn on some of that new-fangled ‘Lean House,’ or listen to some of StrangeFlow’s incredible series of ‘Acid Skrew,’ mixtapes…

Nootropics came out of the closet and into the mainstream, with many of this new and interesting family of drugs being banned… Because that’s what fucking always happens when the government figures out that people are, “having too much fun with something without paying the pharmaceutical companies, first.” Smart drugs such as aniracetam, or L-theanine, came under fire… But, seeing as they were actually not-that-bad, and, in many cases, quite healthy, people kept using them. Aniracetam actually increases cognitive communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain – a process that is associated with creativity… As well, aniracetam (or, ‘Annie,’ as it is often referred) always seemed to present in recording studios and music parties.

Online micro-payments became one of the more dominant financial forms of accessing artistic content online… For half a penny, you could play your favorite tunes from a variety of different sources, cutting out the middle man! Or, if that wasn’t good enough, you could always still pay for the album itself, or go to youtube and get it for free and settle with having to deal with all of those godawful pop-us… Like the one that advertises, ‘Tony’s Pizza,’ – have you seen that one? With the dude tossing the pizza around like a jackass? He’s probably a nice guy, but after seeing him ten million times when you’re just trying to listen to an Aphex Twin track, he gets really fucking irritating after a while. Ah well.

Kazakhstan (as well as a host of other third-world (or nearly-third world) countries) got online in increasing numbers, and were soon producing their own unique variations of existing electronic genres of music. Kazakhstan, specifically, gave the world, ‘Straddi,’ a new kind of music that makes dubstep look like cigarette butts shoved inside an old fucking pancake. Yea, really though, Straddi’s THAT fucking amazing.

Ah, and WHO could forget about szörnyek jövőism??? Monster culture from Hungary/Romania got big. In Hungary, there is a week-long holiday where people dress in elaborate monster costumes and get drunk and wander around the town, engaging in sexual acts and screaming away the bad spirits. Well, the holiday caught on in America and parts of the UK, and I’m sure I don’t have to go into too much detail on that, as I’m sure you’ve all heard about it at this point. Yes, dressing up as some of these very unique Eastern European monsters became popular for DJs, as well as metal bands. As well, Monster Dubz started popping up, and it was really fucking fun. szörnyek jövőism, for the win.

Yes, 2015 was truly the start of a golden era for rave culture, worldwide. ‘WorldPLUR,’ as it was called, became a holiday where the whole world raved out for an entire month. Which month was that? Ah, come on, you’re not completely living under a rock, are you? Unless you’re somehow reading this BEFORE 2016, you know exactly what month I’m talking about.

Also, for about a week, something called, ‘burger funk,’ got big for a minute, garnering 2 billion hits on that website that quickly destroyed Youtube… You know that website, don’t you? Swoopi something? Yea, that one… But that’s not worth going into, as this article has already given as detailed an account as fucking possible on everything that’s happened in the last year or two, and besides, my completely-biodegradable laptop needs to get some sun and recharge it’s 21-hour-battery, so I’m going to let you go… Thank you for reading!

Happy mixin’ !

May, 2014.. Watcha got in store?

May-2014_Bassadelic

Well, everyone, welcome to the Month of May. For most countries, except the one I’m living in, today is huge holiday… but not here, for some reason.

So, admittedly, the month of April went out on a real downer note, for a lot of people, including myself – by now, if you’re interested at all in juke or footwork, you’ve likely heard that the legendary DJ Rashad has passed away. I didn’t know Rashad personally, but I was a huge fan, and still am. My wishes go out to his child and to his friends and fam, everyone at Teklife, and to everyone who knew him. I’m not going to try to act like it’s not sad that he’s gone, obviously it’s very sad, but I will say one thing: Rashad was a down to earth, extremely nice, hard-working & ambitious visionary. That’s a rare combination. I think some of the things that could come out of Rashad’s legacy are the traits I just mentioned… I think anytime you can keep someone’s legacy alive by trying to take on some of their most positive traits and internalizing them, it’s a good thing. I’m not saying it’s something that can always happen over night, and I’m definitely not saying that making music or being ambitious are the only things that are important, because they’re definitely not. But, like I said, I think it’s always good to try and keep your head up, and when a creative legend passes too early, in the end it’s good to remember them by carrying on some of their best traits if and when you can.

Anyway, that’s what I have to say about that, I hope it sounded alright. I’m going to be positive about the month of May and beyond, and try as hard as possible to give everything in life my best shot. I know that might sound really cheesy, but I don’t really care.

So, what’s in store for Bassadelic this month? Well, I have a new full-length footwork jungle album coming out soon, mastered by Simteks, and entitled, ‘Hardcore is Back, Vol 1,’ coming out on Dynasty Shit Records (Bassadelic’s hardcore-electronic record label) and there’s also going to be a couple of new sample packs coming out, as well… Though I’m going to keep some of the projects quiet for the moment, I will say there is going to be another Electro Swing sample pack coming out soon. It’ll be #4! This one, if all goes as planned, is going to have some really fun remixable vocal tunes in it, as well.

That’s definitely not the only thing going on at Bassadelic, but I’ll leave the rest of it as a surprise. Definitely some very fun things happening soon…

Also, in case anyone is interested on helping out with DJ Rashad’s family, Stewart Roberts had this to share on faceboook:

Go buy yourself a #teklife tshirt from @Ashes57 today, profits go to the family of @DJRASHAD: http://t.co/EAOumbktIP

Some real cool shirts at that site, too! From the hexagon with the words TEKLIFE in the middle, to some really involved graphics of little cartoon figures all dancing and footworking to Rashad and Spinn! I recommend them! I don’t know how long the profits are going to Rashad’s family, but I found out about that as of today, May 1st, 2014… So, if you’re reading this in 2021, it’s probably not the case anymore (just sayin) but I recommend getting a shirt, because they’re awesome.

Well, that’s it for now, everyone. Stay tuned, definitely some fun things planned for the month of May :)

…PS
I found this today online. RIP Rashad.

Padlock's Juke to Breakcore Mix

I did this graphic above, I really hope if you are seeing this for the first time, Padlock, that you don’t hate it. I can change it/take it down, whatever ya want; I just wanted to have a cover graphic for this post.

I did a Venetian Snares Top Ten Trax post earlier today, and I thought about it for awhile and realized I WISH I could do a footwork-breakcore top ten (music on the more abrasive side of footwork jungle) but, at the moment, I don’t know that I really could… Maybe there’s some other word for it (other than breakcore) but if there is, I’m not familiar with what that word or phrase is (as of 07:34 PM, EST, 04/14/2014) …perhaps in the fuuuutuuuure it’ll be possible. Maybe the Dynasty Shit sound will blow up :) That’s hopeful! But anyway, I’m not gonna whine and bitch too much more – INSTEAD, I’d rather focus on WHAT IS!

And.. What is…what?

Breakcore footwork! If you want tunes, check out my 5ifty$ix K material; if you want a mixtape, you HAVE TO go through a dude named Padlock.

Who is this Padlock? (www.soundcloud.com/padlock)
https://i1.sndcdn.com/avatars-000060985817-8fcgx8-t500x500.jpg?77d7a69

Hi. I’m Padlock. I’m 20. I live in Florida. I make music and have been for 6 years now (whoa). As far as genres go: It varies. Started in breakcore, but now I find myself in a completely new place, making juke, ambient and future garage music. Who knows where I’ll be in 2 years. I like where I am now though. I hope you do too.

It starts out in juke territory, and it’s a lot of fun; and then it moves into breakcore style edits n tweaks n stutters, old jungle vocal flips, and haaaard n twisted d’n’b rhythms! I’m a fan.

The thing is, there really is virtually nothing like this out there. I’m seeing breakcore’s second wind (only thing with that is… well… it might not be called ‘breakcore,’ but the spirit/vibe/mentality/energy that went into a kind of music like breakcore is starting to slowly but surely resurface….. breakbeats are comin back, speed is coming back (I mean tempo, not amphetamines, narc!) and jungle is comin back. Ze Jungle! So to see footwork/Chi-town juke music get mixed with jungle is just awesome – and to see THAT combination of juke/jungle get even more aggressive and tweaked out the way V.Snares would do it? Ooh, I’m in love with a sound potential like that.

In other words, I know it doesn’t REALLLLY exist yet, in this world, uh..like, almost AT ALL… but I really want it to. So thanks for doing a fucking dope mix like this, Padlock. If you ever want a new album promoted or anything, hit me the funk up!

And btw, there’s a goddamn remix of Squarepusher’s My Hot Red Car in this set! ooh, what dope! such fresh!

Top Ten Venetian Snares Trax !

Top Ten Venetian Snares Trax (selected by StrangeFlow aka 5ifty$ix K)

So, I’ve been getting back into breakcore recently, and then I find out the V.Snares is releasing a new album in June! (On Planet Mu, the album will be called, ‘My Love is a Bulldozer’) and so I decided, “Well, hey, how bout a recap of some awesome V.Snares tunes from the last ten or so years!”

10.) Fuck a Stranger in the Ass

9.) Doormouse – Skelechairs (Venetian Snares Remi)

This track was definitely on many a breakcore mixtape from back in the day, and then Venetian Snares went ahead and remixed it, and guess what happened then – yep! – the remix’d version found itself on a ton of hardcore/breakcore mixtapes of the 2000s, as well! Ah, it was a fun time, that first wave of breakcore, when people freaked out and still got upset about offensive music…. And with a track like this, it’s not even offensive lyrically, but sonically. And speaking of sonically-offensive, with stupidly-abrasive noises and harsh soundscapes that loop on and on much longer than necessary, with time signatures from alternate dimensions and sounds that infuriate and fascinate the eardrums: if you want that, you should really listen to Making Orange Things, which is, arguably, one of the noisiest albums in human history. No, I’m serious. I don’t mean to oversell it, but….it will make you deaf. V.Snares and Speedrance sent tracks to each other over the internet, trying to make the most ridiculously noisy album ever. Well, I think they did it. Keep in mind, this was years before the sickest and most filth-smeared brostep shit ever came to be. Before Datsik. Before Rusko’s fuckaround nightmare bro’d-up dubstep existed. Music was still pretty silly and loopy and noisy and fun – and the case of breakcore – fast! It’s fucking fast as can be! This is back before trading massive patches was a thing. Ah, I sure am glad to see breakcore comin back, even if it is or isn’t being referred to as breakcore***

8.) Make Ronnie Rocket

7.) Ultraviolent Junglist

6.) Winnipeg is a Frozzen Shithole

5.) Fuck Toronto Jungle

4.) Dance Like You’re Selling Nails

3.) Herbie Goes Ballistic

So, yea, this is probably the tenth time I’ve posted this track on Bassadelic over the last couple of years. Well – it’s that good, IMO! If you’re into Venetian Snares (which, well, I’m assuming you are, if you’re on a Top Ten V.Snares Trax post) you should hear this one. I love it, and I hope ya do, too :) If you don’t, well, surf around and find YOUR favorite track, and leave a post in the comments section below. I’d love to know what everyone else’s favorite Aaron Funk song is.

2.) Punk Kids Out There

Ok, so I found this one off a release from V.Snares in the 2000s, and I search for it on youtube, and as it turns out it was from a 1998 tape – a fucking V.Snares TAPE FROM THE 90S! WHAT??? Spells the record label, put this one out in ’98. I didn’t think he had anything out since 2000, but alas! A cassette tape exists from Aaron Funk! Super ultra crazy 90s V.Snares shit! Fuck yea! Hazaaa! Well, if nothing else, this post has become a real learning experience for me… (I mean, consider it’s a top ten for venetian Snares tracks, ya gotta admit: it wasn’t as if you expected to really learn a ton, right? But yes, V.Snares has officially been rocking it for the last three decades – an overindulgent and blatant overstatement, howeer, considering 1998 to 2014 is only 16 years… Unless you’re reading this in the year 2028, that is..

Still, I’m excited to have learned that. Fuck! 1998! OK! Fatboy Slim was blowing up, the Backstreet Boys were moistening girl’s undergarments, and Prodigy were doing their prodigous and prodigal – and in some basement in Canada, Venetian Snares was pioneering a new genre that was (and is) very much of it’s time.

1.) A Giant Alien Force More Violent & Sick Than Anything You Can Imagine

So, this isn’t one track, but rather, a long and interconnected series of scrambled and mind-numbing musical sections that lasts about 14 minutes. You know the 2nd half of Abbey Road? That Medley? Yea, it’s uh, kind of like that, except made by violent aliens who think Earth Music is for the birds. MUTANT ROBOT FUTURE-BIRDS FROM HELL THAT WANT TO FUCK EVERRRRYTHIIIINGGGGGGGG!!!! So if you’ll be so willing, please allow these mutant robot future-birds from hell to fuck your ears, if you have 14 minutes. It’s this kind of release that keeps the music of Aaron Funk well away from the pop charts, but to be honest, I can guarantee that’s not a concern to him. If you’ve listened to all (or even one) of the tracks on this page, it’s easy to see why.

Hope you enjoyed these! I did!

-Will

footnotes:

*** – some people won’t listen to it if it has the word, ‘breakcore’ put next to it, and that’s the way it was back in 2005, as well. It’s a topic I’d be down to going into more depth on, but that’s for another time. Until then, I really hope you enjoyed some of this fine 2000s-era breakcore fuckery :) Consider, for a moment, that some of this music was made over ten or fifteen years ago…. It’s technically never been easier (for the most part) to make electronic music, now that there’s as huge an industry as possible set up for it AND the technology has caught up with what a lot of folks are trying to use it for (not to say that there isn’t a learning curve, especially for some forms of electronic music, because there still definitely is) but think of the possibilities that exist for creating ultra-fast/ultra-alien violent hardcore musical entertainment….

V.Snares is putting out a new album in JUNE! Hooorraaaayyy!!

!new-venetian snares-album yay! june-2014

‘My Love is a Bulldozer’ is coming out June 18, and will be his first LP since 2010 ! He’s released various EP’s since then, but not a full LP! This should be a triumphant return. Maybe this sounds unecessary, but I feel like half the time I mention an LP, people ask me what that means. LP = “Long play,” as in, a full-on-album. EP = Extended play, which is basically longer than a single but shorter than an LP. Somewhat outdated terminology, but then again, so is saying, “have you downloaded my new record?” You can’t download vinyl. If you could, it would no longer be vinyl. Until we have vinyl-output-settings linked up to our 3d-printers, then we can’t—oooh shit, that’s a really good idea, actually – then anyone can do it, and almost any artist can actually make a vinyl, and — ok, I’m digressing a lot.

Here’s a photo an image of Aaron Funk (V.Snares) doin his thing, half hourse, half man. What else would you expect?

So what else it there?

A track listing. It won’t mean anything at all, because you can’t actually hear any of these tracks, but a track listing has been put out, so it might as well grace this post, as well:

01. 10TH CIRCLE OF WINNIPEG
02. DELETED POEMS
03. 1000 YEARS
04. YOUR SMILING FACE
05. AMAZON
06. MY LOVE IS A BULLDOZER
07. SHE RUNS
08. 8AM UNION STATION
09. SHAKY SOMETIMES
10. TOO FAR ACROSS
11. DEAR POET
12. YOUR BLANKET

He’s going to be heading out West for his tour

If you’re unfamiliar with the work of V.Snares, taking a listen to this next track, ‘Herbie Goes Ballistic,’ (from one of his 2000s-era albums, Chocolate Wheelchair) will likely give you the accurate sense that our friend, Mr. Snares, prefers a different artistic aesthetic than many:

W000! Ultra intense breakcore about the Love Bug! I always enjoy it. See, experimental music can ALSO be FUN, too ((I’m looking at you, Animal Collective))…

Hey, if you’re in the mood for it, here’s another youtube link for ‘Herbie Goes Ballistic,’ but played in one of those click-’em-and-click-’em-fast/pretend-you’re-a-dancer-or-rockstar-or-whatever type of games. Kind of fun to watch:

Stepmania: Herbie Goes Ballistic

Yes indeed. So big ups, Aaron Funk. I hope you read this and it thrills you that I would devote a post to your music. Actually, your music has been inspiring me a lot, lately! Also, big ups to Planet Mu for releasing V.Snares’ new one! I’m sure it’ll be great, I’ve heard it’ll be a mixture of his classical/operatic stuff with some of his poisonous breakbeat fire, so we’ll have to see! If anyone knows how to fucks with that 7/8, it’s the Funk man!
