Huge Archive of Old Rave Flyers

Old school rave flyers

Ok, this is REALLY something. Villalobosjayse (Ernie) has been archiving these incredible old school rave flyers for some time, and they span the gambit. If you are into electronic music and went to any kind of electronic music show or rave more than a few years ago, you will probably love this site. I guarentee it’s worth a click (actually, there are so many rave flyers on the site, you could probably spend a whole day just clicking through and having fun!)

I love the imagery of these flyers; there was a blurring of psychedelia with a kind of D.I.Y. punk aesthetic (as rave culture was completely underground – and when I say ‘underground,’ I don’t mean that they were just small-time and ‘indie’ – I mean they were underground because just throwing a rave could land you in jail pretty easily.)

Villalobosjayse's massive rave flyers archive!

Click here to view the entire archive.

Some of the flyers have a number you can call to figure out where the rave was going to be held, as to ensure as much secrecy as physically possible. Those were the real PLUR days.. But, I don’t mean to sound like too much of an old man, as I believe there is still an element of peace and love (both of the music, the rave ‘lifestyle’ and the people around you) in what we today consider rave culture.

The last couple of years have seen a lot of long-time electronic fans complain about how events are too saturated with bro’s… But remember, rave and dance culture has traditionally ALWAYS gone through transitions of being mainstream to going underground to going mainstream again, and then, eventually, back to going underground, once more. That’s just the way it’s happened, and that’s probably the way it’ll keep happening.

Or, if it doesn’t, maybe the PLURinatti should step it up and outweigh the negativity with positivity? Just a thought. And no, when I use the seemingly loaded phrase ‘PLURinatti,’ I don’t mean to rip on ravers too much, I just thought that word sounded really cool ;)

Bass Binge Rave Flyer - from Villalobosjayse's massive rave flyers archive!

So, anyway, if you’re an old producer, a new fan, or just a curious onlooker, please consider a click on this Click link to enjoy some fun graphics from rave’s roots in the U.S. and Canada from the last twenty years.

Oh yea, and btw…

If you have any flyers you wouldn’t mind parting with, or at very least, taking a photo of, please consider doing so and hitting up Villalobosjayse to help build this massive archive!! :D

Please share this page (or preferably, the page I’ve linked several times throughout this post) to help spread some of these lovely images throughout the interwebz even more, and to help get the word out there that a massive archive is currently being built. It might be impossible to have EVERY rave flyer in existence all in one place, but considering there have been literally tens of thousands of rave parties throughout the last twenty-five or so years, I’m sure this collection could be ten times what it is now, potentially! I, for one, think it would be great to have a cultural document that huge and encompassing :)

Thanks for checking this out, everyone!

Here’s what Ernie had to say, on his site:

Magica Sexualis - Old School Halloween Rave Flyer from 1992 With Cartoon-Drawn Naked Woman and Lots of Scary Animals!

HAVE RAVE FLYERS FROM THE 90s?

Much love!

I am a dedicated 1990’s North American Rave flyer collector (phew!) and have been for 17 years. Rave culture saved my life in more ways than one. Accordingly, I am indebted and grateful. You could easily say this is my calling. One of them at least =]

Over the years I have amassed 7000+ unique flyers ranging between 1989-1999 from all over the US & Canada. There are still many amazing examples I am relentlessly hunting for to preserve, as well as those Ive simply never seen. Please keep in mind as time passes more & more are simply discarded as people move or life happens. Please help me save our history! ♥

My online archive is a work in progress containing 6800+ scans and counting. Please let me know if you would like to sell (Paypal/Money Order), trade, or donate your collection or even just your doubles. Your flyers will be babied going to, quite possibly, the best home never to leave my archive. They will forever be available through flickr.com, an inevitable + unavoidable book, & my biggest dream of a public display.

Peace

Much respect to: John Kuzich of the SF rave flyer project, Weed from hyperreal, Eric Paxton of dots per minute, Scotto from NASA, eCon, Bleep, & everyone at A & A graphics, CPU 101, Cody Hudson, DB, Rick Klotz from freshjive, David Marsh from Mars graf-x, Raymond Roker, Tom Allain from Stimuli, Mike Szabo, Matt e. Silver, Gary Blitz & Beej, Ladybug grafiks, and especially Joel T. Jordan and everyone at The Earth Program Ltd. for creating the flyer collecting “Bible” way ahead of its time. And to anyone I have neglected to mention including many fellow collectors all over the world. Thank you.

Plus definitely to every girl or guy who stood for hours passing out flyers one at a time, plastered there bedroom walls with “wallpaper”, and any silly nostalgic who insisted on ensuring memory of good times.

Anyone interested in contributing in anyway can contact me at:

StrangeFlow's Authentic Electro Swing Sample Volume TWO! Even more "vintage-er"

The original ‘StrangeFlow’s Authentic Electro Swing Samples’ turned out to be the most popular thing on this site (with the possible exception of the trap samples) and I decided I wanted to make another package. This new ‘electro swing’ package is even better than the first, in my personal opinion. But unlike an episode of Mad Men, you don’t have to know what happened in the first to enjoy the second one in this series! This second one is my favorite :)

These are some vintage electro swing samples for you, from the sample series that has, in effect, defined what this site is about, to many people. More than I initially realized, to be honest. And this package here? Well, it’s “even more vintage-er” then the first! Why, you may ask? Well, for one thing, while there are definitely some classic big band jazz and swing tunes on here, and some hot artists like Paul Whiteman or Fanny Brice, there are also some real rarities that many fellow electro swing – loving crate-diggers just DO NOT HAVE in their collections. And for another thing, all of these samples are from the mid-1920s or earlier, the ‘Golden Era of Jazz,’ as it were!

These are not recreations or sound-alikes, these are real jazz samples, in some cases remixed a bit around the edges, here and there, to make them more club-ready, and dancefloor-accessible.

CLICK HERE TO GET THIS PACK!

Here’s a demo track made entirely with samples from this package:

So, if it’s authentic swing music you’re after, look no further, you’ve found the most vintage samples IN EXISTENCE. There are no other products ON THE MARKET like ‘StrangeFlow’s Authentic Electro Swing Samples.’

All of these samples are copyright-expired and royalty-free, so you can do anything you want with em, privately or commercially (you just can’t re-sell this product ;)

So, since electro swing is a mixture of some cutting-edge electronic dance beats fused with old-time jazz music – this pack contains both modern beats, as well as older jazz sounds that were left intact – however, all of these samples have been cut and sequenced so that they are ready for remixing/original music composition in any of a number of modern dance styles, such as house, hip hop, techno, moombah, dubstep, electro, complextro, and trap, just to name a few.

Some of them – well, MANY of them, in fact – have been edited, here and there, modernizing them in a cutting edge way for the dancefloors and swing parties that are taking place ALL ACROSS THE WORLD right now, from Paris to New York to New Delhi! The tempo has been listed in the file names of each sample, as well as the artist and song names sampled, where applicable.

In addition, we thought we’d drop a special gift on this release: a BONUS sample package – 150 Moombah beats. If you’re a fan of modern house music, you’ll probably know that moombah has ALSO been killing dancefloors lately! So, if thats a sound you are interested in, then youre in luck.

What else? We’ve included 17 different jazzy vocal samples to mix into your tunes! From Fanny Brice to Marion Harris and Bert Williams, these vocal samples are a lot of fun to mix into the groove.

Ah, yes, and in addition to this, we’ve added 30 funky snares. We’ve provided as many audio tools as possible to get you started and have fun making the swanginest songs on the scene!

All of these files are in .WAV format, the most widely-accepted audio format.

So, below is what’s included, in total, in this package:

– 15 modern swing beats

– 17 swing music vocal samples

– 4 FX sounds: authentic vinyl audio to mix into your tunes

This Will Probably End Trap Music

Posted by StrangeFlow on April 2, 2013

AprilFools!contraption - end of trap music (bassadelic.com)

Well, turns out, that’s not EXACTLY the case. Yes, it’s an April Fool’s Joke.. Though, with a couple of obvious exceptions (the Rick Ross joke at the end being the most obvious one) if someone DID make something like this, then yes, within a matter of months, trap would likely die out pretty quickly..

Click here to see what the fuck I’m talking about.

You know, if you think about it, the engineering / ideas behind it seem pretty sound, to some extent: taking a tune, automatically adjusting tempo, killing the bass so a ‘trap bass’ can be inserted, as well as a few bouncy 808 snares thrown on top… Yea, it definitely would put modern trap remixing into the realm of self parody pretty quickly.. But maybe its a harbinger of things to come?

I mean, I don’t mind the hip hop sound influencing electronic music; in fact, I love that part about it – but the faux-gangsta-raver aesthetic seems like it must be a passing thing. I know people said that about rock music – and they definitely said it about rap music, thirty years ago – but keep in mind, when they said it, even though it turned out that they were wrong – rap did evolve and change forms, didn’t it? And rock music, as well… You don’t hear too much Buddy Holly style rock’n’roll anymore…

Maybe hip hop and electronic music (openly) reuniting will (continue to) be an ongoing trend; the two titans of popular dance / electronically-made music never seem to die out completely, and whenever they spend time away from one another, and then rediscover one another, the results are often fucking amazing. I wrote an article about the lifetime fling of these two epic genres a few months ago, and if you care to check that out, click here.

There are some combinations, however, of hip hop and electronic music that are NOT so good, however. It’s hit and miss, over the course of a half century, so I’ll give it a break, I guess – especially since it’s not currently polluting the airwaves and not really bothering anyone. But, just for the fuck of it, I’ll post a “hip-house” tune, to show what I mean. This is probably my least favorite combination of these two musical aesthetics….

Ok well, this turned into quite the rant, for being, basically, a reposting. Well, it started out as a repost. Anywho, well, there ya have it.

Retox & the Colonel Invite You to Start Getting Fucked Up with their Free 60-Minute Jungle/Juke Mix!

PREHAB. Retox & the Colonel in the Mix

I got an email the other day, apparently someone figured out this site’s creator (me) is a HUGE fan of jungle/juke hybrids. So, I was given this awesome mix, which I’ve posted below. It’s called PREHAB, with Retox & the Colonel in the mix! An MC spicing up some incredibly forward-thinking beats. Well, they both definitely gained a new fan, that day, that’s for damn sure. And, If you haven’t heard of these guys yet, I’m sure you’ll be a fan, too, after hearing this mix. So mark this in JUKE / JUNGLE : they give away a FREE DOWNLOAD of the ENTIRE HOUR-LONG MIX!!!! Hard to beat that.

Big ups to the guys for emailing me this mix, I get a lot of random emails from folks who want me to hear or review their music, and sometimes it’s good, sometimes… it’s not so good… but THiS? THiS is a really fun mix, and if you’re into either fast breaks n 808s, you’ll love it.

Ah yes, and here’s their track list…

Big ups to Trainwreckers Podcast Episode 9 for Mentioning the new Ebook from StrangeFlow!! :)

the TrainWreckers Podcast

“Instant Spam Response” is the name of this week’s episode of The TrainWreckers Podcast, hosted by Uncommon Sense, KidLogic, Slurgeon, Lurky, & Ghostmode. It’s a fun episode, and I would expect nothing less from these crazy Portland Muhfuckaz. They talk about self-promotion, the importance of being original in music, and they do a book report on StrangeFlow’s “Guerilla Blueprints for Creative Passive Income” (available now, on the right scroll bar of Bassadelic.com, or in the ‘store’ tab) and go into detail about my favorite chapter of the book, about greyhacking.

Greyhacking is about finding the grey and uncharted territory in between two different niches, and exploiting it. Basically, carving out your own little area, musically and conceptually, and owning it. One good example is making an “unofficial soundtrack” for a comic book. Who knows, maybe you can get some fans or actual artists/writers of the comic book to take notice, and maybe they’ll mention you in their next comic. That’s just one example to get you started, but there are tons of different ideas in the ‘Guerilla Blueprints’ book to help electronic musicians get going on creating something truly unique, fun, entertaining (and profitable).

Anyway, I’m really fucking stoked that the TrainWreckers Podcast mentioned the site and the book. Those guys rock! Check out their newest episode here or here.
