Tons of Great (FREE) Jungle Samples

Tons of Jungle Beats!!
So, I found this AMAZING post recently, and felt I had to share it.

TONS of free samples, cut from jungle records from 1989 through 1999 (pretty much the bulk of the jungle years, IMO) and when I say ‘jungle records,’ I mean it – no MP3’s were used for these samples. Blu Mar Ten put them together, and the release is called ‘JungleJungle.’

Here’s what they said, from their website:
_________________
“This pack is made up of samples taken from tracks in our record collection. It started as a bit of fun to kill time in between proper music work and suddenly became quite large, so it seemed a shame not to share it.

These are not some secret special sounds only available to ‘jungle legends’. Anyone with the tracks and some time to waste could have made this pack.

• Size – 390mb
• Contents – 650+ breaks, basses, pads, riffs, hits, vocals & FX
• Format – All samples taken from vinyl or CD and saved as 16bit WAVs.
• No mp3s were involved at any point in the process.
• All samples are cropped & normalized.
• The earliest sample in the pack is from 1989 and the latest is from 1999.
• This pack was created for fun and is not to be sold. All rights remain with the original creators of the samples. If you use these samples for commercial purposes you need to seek the appropriate clearance.

“If you’re not already familiar with how drum & bass came into being we encourage you to go back in time and explore the history. There’s some amazing music waiting for you there.”

So…are they public domain? Copyright free? There’s a question! They just said in their post that these are not cleared for your usage, so that pretty much sums it up, eh? Here’s the thing: many of these samples (cut from jungle records) are samples cut from older records. So they’re samples of samples. (kinda skwunc, eh?) Does that mean they’re cleared? For you? No. But I say it’s ‘not simplistic’ simply because many of these samples would not have to be cleared by the jungle producers, as, in many cases, they didn’t create them – many of them would have to be cleared by unidentified artists from the 60s, 70s, and 80s…. So, as far as copyright, you need to do your own research on that, as I can not help you with all of these samples, and the two guys who cut these samples say they don’t want to bother with identifying the originals, either. So, just thought I would mention all of this. They’re still fun samples to play around with. So, have fun!

New Samples, Articles, and Reviews, Comin' Soon!

Whats up everyone?

So here’s what happened. My laptop I had been using (fat too often?) finally died.

I was working at the time, and everything froze on me, so after waiting awhile, I restarted the thing. That didn’t prove helpful, as it froze, yet again, so I restarted it once more. This time, it wouldn’t come back on. I tried to do all I ccould, over and over, nut nothing worked, so I finally decided to get it fixed at the store…

Well, aside from telling me that it’s probably one of the worst and most-messed-up hard drives they’d ever seen, I decided it was probably time to get a new machine, anyway. I’d been contmplating it for months, and now that my old one is fucked, what a perfect opoporutnity, eh?

So I got a new laptop a couple days ago, and am only going to be able to get a partial amount of files from the old laptop.

But, I’ve been working insanely hard recently to get things back together and work on some new stuff. Now that I have a new machine, I have the ability to work about twice as fast as before, so I’ve been grinding. Fuckin grinding.

I’m going to be releasing a moombah beats pack – WAY bigger than the 20-sample demo I put out a couple months ago. Im still waiting to see if I can get the wonky downtempo breaks off my old computer (had about 70 AWESOME beats on there) as well as a big juke samples pack I was doing (also about 70 files) and also, I’m going to be working on several other packages – and of course, I’m going to be putting up some new reviews and articles, as well!

So, please stay tuned. I’m going to be working as hard as possible to bring new things to the site as fast I can, while still maintining the high quality output that Bassadelic fans have come to love and expect!

Thanks for your patience in BEARING with us, everyone!!!

Weird 1950s EDM Track Uncovered

Beatniks and Bass

Behold! The oldest rave tune in the world… (scroll down a bit to get this rare tune)

(and yes, this is humor)

Edward Maniths, from the Detroit Audio Discovery Society (DADS) reported today that an old electronic-music record was unearthed, after digging through dusty old record crates in a now-abandoned (and little known) Motown recording studio in what many people believe to be the ‘scariest city in America.’

“Yea, well, thing is… most Motown records were not recorded anywhere near this old building,” says Maniths, as he stands outside Beatflip Studio, in downtown Detroit, “yea, I mean… I guess they were kind of an offshoot, trying to compete with the big boys, but their records were a little bizarre for the Motown crowd.”

It was true. There were a few heavy-bass tunes that made their way to vinyl, 50 to 60 years ago, as beatniks and underground musicians would pool money together (selling marijuana in downtown basement parties) in what was, once, a thriving Michigan city. Secret underground 1950s bass-music parties were a rare – yet interesting – subculture of the beats.

“Ahh, you found it? Wow! I didn’t think any of that one still existed! Ha! Oh my!” reports Chester Burgh, a self-identified, “Bassnik,” from the ’50s.

“Yea, you know what the hell happened, don’t you? Our music was too scary! Even for Detroit! Ha!” said Chester, as he went to grab a cigarette, and I informed him that there was no smoking in our office.

“No smoking in here? Ah,” he gave a disgusted look, “see now, that right there is what we were rebelling against. The MAN! You can’t tell me not to smoke! I just wanna bass out and listen to some late 50’s BASS SHIT and do my thing, ya dig?”

I did not dig, and as he went to light his cigarette a second time, I informed him that I would have to ask him to leave.

“Well, fine, whatever. This party’s gotten a lot less hatty then I wanted, anyway. Narc.”

I went back to Edward Maniths, who was, compared to Chester, an uptight nerd. A ‘square,’ to use the parlance of a forgotten time. I wanted to verify that the recording was legitimate.

“Yes, indeed, it’s legitimate! There’s a picture of some of the prominent poets in the scene,” he said, pointing out Kerouac and Ginsberg, and scratched his head at the other members of the photo, adding, “hmm.. you know, I know I should know who these others are, but I guess I’m not really an expert on 1950s culture.”

Extremely irritated, disappointed, and at this point, a little hungry, I decided it was time to have a listen to this unearthed gem of a recording. Well…. it was breathtaking, to say the least… Though, in fairness, most of the tracks are hard to listen to, as they are ‘too subversive’ for me, and likely, for anyone else. Plus, the record is very scratched.

“Well, undoubtedly, this record is the kind of thing that contributed to rave culture in Detroit, a few decades later. I’m guessing there are two or three of these records floating around, to this day…And as for the sounds? Well, there were a few drumboxes at the time, a lot of them just kinda’ hacked together by some of the more tech-savvy Beats… They made something that sounds like the TR-808, but long ahead of it’s time… Yea, the grime kids, the 2-steppers, the trip-steppers, the hop-hippers, the trappers and the jukers?  All those guys basically stole what is on that record there, the one that’s just been discovered…”  said Chester, sweating.

Chester had followed me home, and was now answering questions I wasn’t asking.

“People don’t much talk about it now, I mean… It’s not something you hear about on VH1. But you know what? FUCK Vh1. Yea, I said it…  But yea, you know, it was a golden time for underground bass music. Kids would head down to the basement, smoke up, listen to some jazz, then, if shit really got cookin, it’d be time for some BASS! You know? Oh yea, there was a whole scene! There were the Bassboys, the Bassniks, the Bassa Nova, Kody B & the Boys of Bass, uh… 50s-Bassernauts… (that was my group, the 50s-Bassernauts – we were so hatty!) and uh, let’s see… the track you’re listening to? The guy who put that one together – I sold him weed, once. Smart cat. Ugly, though. Jesus, really ugly. You know? Like, like even for a guy from Ohio. He was from Ohio. You know?”

“I’m not sure what you mean by that, Chester. I AM FROM OHIO.”

“Right, well, uh, you’re one of the good ones, then, you know?”

I slammed my box of Wheaties to the ground (which annoyed me, as I had grown really hungry the last several hours, and wanted nothing more than to eat some fucking Wheaties ) and I showed Chester the door.

He didn’t understand my obvious hint, so I began hitting him.

“Woah, mellow out, bro.” said Chester.

I did not mellow out, but eventually, Chester left.

I hate Chester. But this is a good recording. Rare 50s bass music. Kinda sounds like something StrangeFlow would do. But… I mean, like, a 50s version of StrangeFlow.. I don’t know, that’s just the impression I get, personally. Check it out.

The Best Tip For Staying Beyond Your Competition

Posted by StrangeFlow on September 7, 2012

How to Build a Super Blunt Castle in the Sky and Have a MUCH Better Hammock

A QUICK NOTE: I have a friend (Simteks) who recently started a music production blog, and I want to make it clear, when I talk about competition in this article, I’m not talking about him. Just want to make that clear :) I don’t look at it that way, I look at it more like … me and him VS. the world… in this case, “the world,” being all the the other big-name music production blogs out there. So, there ya go…:D

To explain the graphic – there’s one dude in his hammock, smoking a blunt, with a new album. Woot. To the right, there’s a dude building a castle, selling twice as many albums, and giving away mixtapes, and he’s got TONS of blunts, and a WAY better hammock. Well, I guess the hammock isn’t THAT much nicer. Still…

Ok, so I know a lot of folks think you’re not supposed to want money for your music. You’re supposed to do it for the love of music, and not think about income, because if you even consider making a couple bucks, you’re a horrible corporate sell-out, and the indie police are gonna getcha!

If you’re someone with this mindset, then this article is NOT for you.

I love music, but I also do NOT live in my parent’s basement. My parents don’t cook me dinner or pay my rent. Also, I don’t split the rent six ways, living in a tiny townhouse with all my friends and their significant others… so, for all intensive purposes, I’m going to completely set aside the asinine assumption that the basic premise of ‘wanting to make a living through something you’re good at it,’ is, in any way, shape or form, anything other than completely desirable. You go back to working at Taco Bell for your living, and I’ll keep trying to earn my keep by utilizing my skills and talents, and we’ll both assume the other is wrong. Deal?

Ok, now that I got the haters out of the room, let’s talk real shit…

Here’s a tip that you can use in your craft, right now.

It’s something to contemplate, measure, contemplate some more, and then act upon. You will probably have to do some research for your personal line of work, but that’s ok – and I’ll explain why…

First of all, you might be a musician. Or, you might consider yourself a producer… or a promoter, or a writer, or an artist/graphic designer, or maybe you’re the hype-guy for someone else’s group. Whatever the case may be, you’re in competition with anyone else who’s in your line of work.

Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not saying you have to hate whomever you’re in competition with. In fact, you can feel completely free to love anyone and everyone around you! But, to be real, if you are, for example, a producer, working on some trap beats, guess what – you’re in competition with every other producer making trap beats.

Just to clarify and reiterate, you do NOT have to hate other trap producers. That’s really not the point. In fact, I would encourage everyone to help everyone else out. Often, you’ll find that by being helpful to others, you’re also helping yourself. But back to the point…

Here’s one thing you should keep in mind – and this is the meat of the article – you have to get beyond the point of your competitor’s laziness.

Find out who your top competitor is, and find out what their working mode is. Find out how much time they put into their skill, their craft, their art, their beats, and go beyond it. Fuck, don’t just go beyond it, make a promise to yourself to try to double the amount of work they’re doing. Even if you come up just short of your goal of doubling up, you’re still, likely, far ahead of them, right?

So they write 15 twitter messages a day to promote their music and talk to people. Plan to write 30, and plan to make ‘em good.

So they write one album a year, and release a mixtape every two months… Your move? Drop two high-quality albums a year, and at least one dope mixtape every month. They plan to sell X? You sell X*2. You see where I’m going with this?

Maybe ‘laziness’ is not always the best term to use, as many producers do work hard, but in this case, it might help to look at the competition this way. Everyone stops somewhere, you dig?

So your competitor smokes 4 blunts a day and snort 6 lines of coke. Your move? Only smoke 2 blunts a day and only do 3 lines. ( I know the title graphic looks like the opposite, but that’s because he’s going for long-term-rewards… I’ll explain that in a minute) Ok, so this paragraph is sort of a joke. But my point is this: get half as high and work twice as hard. Work past the point of your competition’s laziness… Or, hell, since that getting high part is up to you, if you can work twice as hard AND get twice as high, more power to you… I’m just saying, make realistic goals – and prolific / ambitious goals.

I once knew a girl who would routinely smoke 8 blunts a day. I’d ask her how she was doing, and she always complained of being tired… Off topic, sorry.

So there it is, work past the point of your competitor’s laziness (AT LEAST) … beyond that, do your research and find out how much they’re willing to share with the public about their work efforts, and (if you’re up for it) commit yourself to working twice as hard as them. Try to blow them out of the fucking water. It’s a good mentality for anything, and not just music – though, this is a music blog, so clearly I’m focusing on that more than anything else.

If they play 50 shows a year, could you play 100?

How about their website? Do they update it every week? Update yours twice a week, or even more, if you can. If you don’t take this advice, someone else might, and then they’ll blow YOU out of the water.

So, like I said, contemplate this, do your homework, and research what you need to do, and then go into personal development mode. Find out how much you can do and how much you’re able to push yourself. Not saying to be unhealthy about it, but what I AM saying is to try as hard as you can.

Also, one other piece of advice: consider short term gains vs. long term gains. Do you want to feel good NOW, for something minor? Or, do you want to work hard, consistently, and find a much greater reward LATER? That’s a whole other topic I could discuss, and I don’t want to drop any more information into this article, as it might convolute the main point I’m trying to make. So, again, just to re-re-reiterate: work past the point of your competitor’s laziness. It’s a great tactic, and if you do it, you WILL see results.

Trap Music Documentary

Certified Trap Mini-Documentary, Episode 1

A documentary that was just put out by Mad Decent. Very interesting twenty minute video.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary, and it gave me some real insight into the world of trap music.

Trap originated in the South about ten or so years ago, and it’s growing and growing since then. In the last few years, dubstep, house, and other electronic styles of music have been combined with trap to create something new for this second decade of the 21st century of ours…

So, watch the video, and see for yourself! It’s well done… The intro is a little cheesy with the narration… Kinda douchey, actually.

The folks at Mad Decent, Trill HD, LiveMixtapes.com, and ClubTapes (as well as TONS AND TONS of great trap musicians) present this incredibly exciting documentary on an emerging new musical scene that definitely could eclipse dubstep in popularity and scope….as well as musical range. Not to rip on dubstep TOO much, but it’s a relevant critique, and you’ll see why after you watch the video…

StrangeFlow’s Guide to Electro Swing

yes it’s true! Another tutorial for the world to watch and then judge me for! :D

I tried to break it down easily, and I tried to cover as many bases as I could…. from copyright issues, and two techniques for remixing swing – 1.) fitting samples to the beat, and 2.) fitting your beat to the samples.

For this, I used a Paul Whiteman sample that has been cleared for public domain, and the song I used was actually cut up a few times and used in the electro swing sample pack I mentioned in the video! You can go download that here:
