the Jazz Gene: Why Some Music Has No Genre…

the Jazz Gene - Why Some Music Has No Genre

Not that shit that puts your grandfather to sleep, that shit your grandfather fucked his stripper girlfriend to in 1928, both of em messed up on reckless amounts of moonshine, weed, and who knows what else! I want jazz that threatens to kill people. I want jazz that has killed a few people. I want jazz that’s vicious and breathes fire, I want chainsaw jazz that wants to fuck your grandmother. (See photo above)

Now, you might be thinking, “Ah, StrangeFlow, what are you doing? Talking about jazz, now? This is an electronic blog, isn’t it? Come on, make with the step!; either dub-, 2-, or future-; but don’t kill us with this shit. Why  now? Why here?

Because I think jazz might be beyond genre; I think jazz is an aesthetic, and I’ll tell you how that relates to electronic music.

Let me explain what I mean… Jazz is not just a specific chord progression, but a mood. It’s not what notes you play, but with what attitude you play them with. To put it in context with modern electronic music, I have often thought that really good breakcore should sound just like jazz. Not the musical genre of jazz, but jazz as a kind of musical verb.

For breakcore specifically, it would mean jazzing out the breaks and samples in such a complex and seemingly chaotic (yet precisely controlled and meticulously formed) way so as to create a tangled string of beautiful and colorful knots; making a mess while simultaneously cleaning it up – a contradictory sound – a jarring language of intersecting sounds and noises, all fitting together like jagged little pieces to a mind-blowing puzzle. Good breakcore should have jazz in its DNA.

So, what I’m getting at, basically, is that jazz needn’t act like the boring old senior citizen most people take it for. And, to be fair, there have been some interesting trends for jazz in the last twenty years. Well, more or less… And, I’ll point out that even though I personally see it as an aesthetic, it’s not unusual to see it acting as merely a genre. Most people see it as one more passing trend, and nothing more. Sure – an interesting, and perhaps an epic trend – but an older one at that, and one that’s mostly dead, at this point.

But I think it’s bigger than that. I think that if “jazz-as-a-genre” dies (or if it already is dead) the spirit it encapsulates will still be with us, showing up in other forms. Jazz is what happens when musicians play, when they have an articulate conversation purely through the realm of musical devices and instruments, within the mode of uninhibited improvisation. It’s a mental wave length, a language. It can be fast, slow; straight, crooked; happy, blue; and in addition, it can also be maniacal, sinister, evil, and potentially quite perverted.

It’s really a very vivid bastard.

So, although I do think jazz music could (and should) reincarnate itself as a voodoo cannibal from hell, and even if the genre as we think of it isn’t coming back (with that same specific combination of conventional jazz instruments and formulas from the 20th century) the gene of jazz will probably stay inside us, as a species, for another million years. If we dig deep, we can get to it, as it’s always there.

Perhaps this is the way we should evaluate some forms of artistic expression, from now on – as being, potentially, more than just a genre. Not necessarily based soley on popularity or uniqueness, but on whether or not it’s BEYOND all those things, and if it can change you, mentally, to a specific degree, when you hear it, and entice you into performing or creating something creative with a certain type of energy. On that note, I also think punk is an aesthetic, as well. And, on that token, I think it might be arguable that funk is also an aesthetic, when it’s done right – meaning, when you’re not ‘faking the funk,’ – it’s a mix of confidence, sexual energy and experimentalism. Notice how I didn’t define it at all with musical concept?  I’ll also point out that funk was once used as a description of jazz music, before it turned into it’s own genre, decades later. There’s lots of cross-pollination. In fact, I see no reason why you couldn’t punk out some funk with a jazz outlook, as well…

Well, I think I’ll finish this article here. If there’s any interest, maybe I could elaborate and go on to talk about punk or funk later, but for now, I think I’ll wrap it up. I don’t want to go off on any more tangents, like the one where I explain how melody is all just color, American dubstep is actually heavy metal, or, on a lighter note, how it’s impossible for anyone to look sexy while eating Taco Bell… no, I’ll save those for another day. Ha.

So, yes, to say that jazz is not a genre it’s simplistic. It can act as a genre, but really, it’s more than that, too. I’m not against the specific genres that jazz has formed, in fact, there are lots of different forms of jazz music that I love; espeially bop, dixieland, and electro swing… But, various other forms of music beyond jazz (that are now seen as genres) can also fit the description of going ‘beyond genre,’ as well. As I said, more on that later. I need to go work on some more sample packs… Leave a comment, tell me what you think! :-)

The Forty-Year Trojan Horse: a House Music Conspiracy Theory

the Forty-Year Trojan Horse: a House Music Conspiracy Theory

Subtitle: Why House Music (and Hip Hop, For That Matter) Will Never Die

Ok so, you might not a be die-hard house fan. Or, maybe you are. But regardless, chances are, you’ve heard more than a few house tracks in your life. (If you went to ANY electronic show in the 90s, you probably heard some house music) And so, I wanted to bring up an interesting point, which I think is sometimes taken for granted: House is never going away.

Why? Well, at it’s core, it’s got a very danceable, catchy groove. To be more complex about it, it’s often featuring Spanish or Latin percussive elements and is usually somewhat mid-tempo (though it can definitely get slow, and definitely get fast) and it’s in everything now-a-days. Actually, that’s an understatement, as it’s been in everything for decades, as well.

Proof? Yea, I got your proof! House has been around since the mid-1970s, and, with a few exceptions, it’s been blowing up the Top 40, as well as dance clubs and bedroom speakers ever since! You might be thinking, “Woah, woah, StrangeFlow. The 70s? Typo! I’m going to leave an angry comment!” Ok, you can go ahead. But consider this, first: have you heard of KC & the Sunshine Band? Or how about Donna Summers?

Disco is house.

Disco reached a peak in the 70s, and through oversaturation and an angry and homophobic rock-crowd-backlash, it was pushed underground; only to reappear, a very short time later, with new colors, updated technology, and better drugs – and they called it house music, as it was played in warehouses in the Midwest.

Same basic groove, but with something new – the ‘acid sound’ that was invented when some musical folks started remixing old disco records and fucking around with a drum machine called the TB303 and creating a weird, sequenced, arppegiated noise that was perfect over that basic 4/4 dance beat.

The tracks got a bit sparser, and in some cases, more amateurish (which makes sense, as many of the original house tracks WERE done by amateurs in their bedrooms… sound familiar?) and 1986 was considered the year that house music ‘blew up.’

Then, England got a hold of house music, put their unique take on the sound, and eventually gave it back to America, who loved it.

In the 90s, house was all over the place. Even if you didn’t know you were listening to it, it was still there. That’s one of its secrets, see – if you told people in the 90s that what they were listening to on their stereo was house music, some would say, ‘Cool, ok! House rocks!’ and some would say, ‘What? No, this is Powerman 5000!’ or, ‘No, this is Ramstein! It’s metal! It’s not house!,’ But that’s the guerilla science of house – it can turn up anywhere, and at any time, and it’s been doing it for so long, it’s gotten really good at it.

I remember when electro was more of a techno thing… Now, it’s been married to house music, creating ‘electro-house,’ or (with more guerilla tactics) you could just call it ‘electro.’

…

And moombah? Again, mix reggaeton with house, and you get moombah.

How about pretty much everything Lady Gaga has done? House! That new Rihanna track you just heard? House – or, at very least, a incredibly strong house influence.

So, this isn’t just a rant to tell you to make house. I’m not saying that. If you want to, do it – but really, the point is just this – if you want to infiltrate the system with electronic music (that people might not instantly realize IS ‘electronic music,’ for whatever reason) give them something with house in it. It’ll likely be catchy, and it’s been proven as a successful formula for almost forty years, and it just sounds good. It’s a titan sound.

Also, perhaps I should mention that I’m speaking as an American. I don’t know if any of this is true in Australia or France or London. Leave a comment and tell me, if you like.

As a side note, another title for this thread could’ve been “Disco – a music that’s SECRETLY everywhere,” but I instead chose to go with the ‘house’ label. But really, that’s the truth – once disco took off it’s clothes and poured some acid onto itself, it became acid house, and I’m going to make a strong prediction that it’ll still be here for another decade… or three… Or maybe even more. It seems to have this way of sounding good and yet deceiving people, all at once.

Now, if you’re reading this, there’s a decent chance you’re not necessarily one of the folks being deceived. But it’s the same thing with hip hop – case in point: I remember talking to a friend of mine about what kind of music she liked. She said something like, “I listen to hardcore. Metal. My favorite band is Korn,” and I said, “Oh, ok, so you like hip hop and rock, huh?” and she said, “What? No, I HATE hip hop! I listen to Korn!” : – )

You see where I’m going with this? Even if a bunch of White kids who listen to metal think they ONLY listen to metal, there’s a good chance they also like hip hop, if they listen to things like Korn, or other rap-metal groups… (now, keep in mind, this was a few years ago, before Korn kind of changed up their sound and ‘invented dubstep’ and… well, I don’t know or care what they’re up to now, to be honest) but the point is, there are some very pivotal styles of music that have emerged (hip hop and house) which both emerged out of the 1970s, by the way – and both went on to infiltrate the masses. Both in secret, as well as upfront and openly. Funny, isn’t it? – how people who don’t know much about music and who have very closed-minded musical tastes aren’t always QUITE as closed-minded as they might think!

But anyway, that’s the formula. I could’ve ranted a lot more about hip hop, too; explaining how everything that isn’t house-influenced is likely influenced by hip hop, unless it’s “pure rock,” (a term that I hate, and always considered very iffy… what is “pure” supposed to mean, anyway? Really. I’ve always sensed racial undertones, in that phrase, although you know they would NEVER admit it, but it has been a word that White people have used throughout history to separate themselves from “the others”) but I figured, if you understand my point about house, you probably understand my point about hip hop, too.

So there you have it. The two titans of Western pop music of the last half-century. The Trojan Horses of the late 20th century and early 21st century. Do what thou wilt with this information, and next time you turn on the radio (IF you do) listen for the house beat.

Impatientism: A Guaranteed Recipe for Success NOW!

Impatientism: A Guaranteed Recipe for Success NOW!

Subtitle: Impatience Redefined

Is there a secret to success? Fuck yes, there is! I’ll give it to you right now, too! I’ll give you insight into something that can separate you from at least 90% of your competition RIGHT NOW… No, I’m completely serious when I say that! Ok, so enough of the hype… what’s the formula? Here it is… in order to be WAY ahead of most of your competition, you have to cultivate a mentality of EXTREME MOTIVATION, and the drive to work harder and better than anyone else around you – become the most ambitious person you know. Imagine what the most motivated man/woman on Earth would be doing RIGHT NOW, if they had the same goals as you did… Picture that for a minute, and then write down what you see, and then get to work.

Is that it?

What do you mean, ‘is that it?!’ That’s a lot! … But no, actually, that’s not it. I also wanted to talk about patience vs. impatience, and I’m telling you, you probably haven’t heard this before…

Now, here’s another bit of information that not too many folks will tell you… in fact, they’ll likely tell you the opposite! It is said that patience is a virtue, and that, “people need to slow down, people are too rushed around, and far too impatient.”

I say that’s a bunch of bullshit.

Yes, you need to relax sometimes, obviously. But I don’t think impatience is to blame. In fact, I think impatience is one of the keys to survival. The problem, if there is one, is that people use impatience the WRONG way.

There’s a positive use of impatience, and a negative use. Just as there is for patience, as well. I liken the word patience to the concepts of waiting, idle time, and even ‘slacking.’ Likewise, I see impatience as a synonym to concepts such as survival, ambition, doing, getting shit done NOW, not waiting until tomorrow, etc.

But you can mess it up if you’re not careful. Just going and going and going impatiently won’t necessarily get you the results you want, in music production, or in anything else, for that matter.

So what you have to do is use patience as a foundation. Plan out what you want to do today. Sure, more things might come up, but focus primarily on what you want to get accomplished today. This Foundational Patience will serve you well when you get up and go do what it is you set forth on your plan.

Next, use your impatience as motivation to get up and do what’s on your list! Patience is not the enemy, but thoughtless patience is very much the enemy! Yes, you need both patience and impatience. It’s technically a balance, but I give WAY more credit to impatience, on this one… You have to start out in the thoughtful realm of calmness and waiting, but then once you know where you’re going, get up and fucking do it, now. Right now.

See, that’s why I call it Impatientism. (and no, I’m not referencing the small art movement) Impatience is given an undue hatred in our society, and patience is considered a virtue, but really, you should focus on both, and, to be honest, most of the time you should be using your impatience to succeed.

Don’t do it later. Don’t get high first. Don’t do it tomorrow. Don’t get on Facebook. Don’t make a Hot Pocket. Do what’s on your list, and get that shit done, now! Impatience is awesome, and you need to tap into it. Don’t waste too much time pretending you’re productive if you’re not getting anything done. Plan things out, but don’t waste time on it, either. Plan shit out, and then do it. That’s it. Whatever you wanted to accomplish in the next seven days, plan on doing it in the seven hours.

What about taking brakes?

Of course you can take a brake. You don’t want to burn out and faint while you’re sprinting to the finish line. Yes, take a brake if you’re tired. A small brake. And as you take your brake, use your foundational patience to refocus on what you want to do. Then, after that little ten minute brake is complete, be even MORE impatient and body slam your tasks into the fucking wall. KILL the day, be violent with how productive you are. (Yes, that’s figurative, don’t ACTUALLY get violent… lol) Prove to yourself how centered and ultrafocused you are.

I just realized that my word processor inserted a troublesome red line underneath my use of the word, ‘ultrafocused,’ indicating that it’s not a real word. But I’m going to leave it in anyway, because as far as I’m concerned, it’s a real concept, and if “lol” is in the dictionary, ‘ultrafocused’ is just as goddamn legitimate, as far as I’m concerned, in my ultrafocused mindset :)

Think about this, too – who inspires you? Who has really gone out of their way to get something out of life that seems downright fucking miraculous, in your view? Now, think about this, too – they’re human. If they can do it, with whatever was inside of them, deep down in their psyche, their core, their ‘soul,’ then you can do it, too.

With few exceptions, pretty much anyone can take on pretty much any task. Yes, there are exceptions… A guy in a wheelchair probably won’t play in the NBA… If you don’t know what a “math” is, you probably won’t be a computer programmer… But I’ll assume that pretty much everyone who’s reading this IS capable. (If you’re not capable of something, network, network, network! Use your impatience to figure out the best route to getting people to help you in the areas you’re shorthanded at, and be willing to help them out, too.) But I’m telling you, pretty much anything you could want out of life – you have the potential inside of yourself to accomplish it.

Anyway, so there you are… new concepts to think about…

Foundational Patience, Positive Impatience, Ultrafocus, Impatientism,

Remember, impatience is NOT a bad thing, and everyone is society who got what they wanted had to have a decent amount of impatience in them, whether they knew it or not. Now go take on the day! Destroy it!

Some people might ask you why you don’t slow down… Ask yourself why they don’t speed up.

-Will (Strange)
