Top Ten J Dilla Jams

The Best Tracks That J Dilla Had His Hands On

J Dilla was one of the best hip hip producers out there. He was from Detroit, and he was incredibly prolific, dropping some of the dopest hip hop gems the world has ever heard. He’s not with us anymore, but his legacy lives on through the incredibly prolific output of music he’s responsible for creating.

Listening to his work, you hear a range of stylistic influences; he made straight-up Detroit ghetto hip hop, as well as soulful tunes, funky tunes, jazzy tunes, he even used bossa nova… How often do you hear bossa nova in a hip hop groove? Not often… He also was a heavy-user of sidechain compression (also known as ‘ducking’).

So, even though he has TONS of great grooves, and I recommend SO many of them, here are my ten of favorite tracks by Dilla. He worked with a lot of great artists, too, so not all of these are instrumentals. Most are, though, but I had to include the beat he produced for a Busta Rhymes tune. It’s catchy as fuck. Seriously, ten seconds of incredibly hooky / catchy hip hop gold…

Here’s a documentary of Dilla (actually it’s just the first portion of a documentary, but links to the other parts show up after the video ends) to get things rollin’…

I got into instrumental hip hop years ago, when Napster was one of my main sources of new music… I used to download the instrumentals of rap songs… I’d listen to beats by the Beatnuts, Jay-Z, Eminem, and a lot of other artists that made up the mainstream hip hop scene of the 90s… I also got into DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, and other downtempo breaks artists like that… Well, this provided a foundation for my love of hip hop music. Years later, I discovered he work of Madlib and J Dilla, and I was fucking hooked!

I remember hanging out in my room, writing in my journal, burning some incense, smoking some weed, and listening to a huge playlist of Madlib. Those were great, chill times… You can REALLY create a relaxed atmosphere when you play soulful, downtempo hip hop breaks…

So, with that in mind, I’d like to share with you the top ten best tracks by J Dilla…

10.)

J Dilla – Sounds Like Love

09.)

Busta Rhymes – High (Produced by J Dilla)

08.)

Biggie Smalls – The Ugliest (feat. Busta Rhymes) (prod. J Dilla)

Gotta include this. Biggie + J Dilla? Ah! If you’re a fan of slightly-old-skool hip hop, this combination is fucking gold.

07.)

J Dilla – Feel the Beat

06.)

J Dilla – Trashy

05.)

Slum Village – Fall in Love

Slum Village was a group that Dilla ushered in, and take your pick on which you like the most – the instrumental or the vocal version. They’re both dope.

04.)

Q Tip – Let’s Ride

03.)

J Dilla – Pause

02.)

J Dilla – Let The Dollar Circulate

So… Whenever I hear this track, I feel like the vocal sample is a guy singing, “Let McDonalds suck your leg,” or, “Let ‘the Donald’ suck your leg,” but then I looked it up, and it’s not that at all, it’s, “Let the dollar circulate,” just like the name of the song. Ha. But anyway, this is a really nice tune. It has a great, dusty old vocal sample, and the way he loops the end portion of the word, ‘circulate,’ works very well for the song. I’d imagine it would be an excellent track for some rap lyrics, but it also stands up well enough on it’s own, too.

01.)

J Dilla – Nothing Like This

Hard to pick a favorite. Very hard. This one is one of my favorites, but really, the last few tracks are definitely bangers, too… Wanted to use this Top Ten format to showcase some of the incredible work of this late artist, though, so I had to choose something for the number one spot… So, there you go. If you search around, there is so much good music by J Dilla, and I hope some of these tunes might spark some folks interest who might not be turned onto this dude’s music yet.

Datahowler’s New Vinyl, Art Book, & Terrarium!

Datahowler Has a New Album, New Art, and, Best of All, New Terrariums

Well, Datahowler has a new EP he’d like to share with the world. He also has terrariums and original artwork he would also like to share.

He’s put this album (called Crystal Gazers) up on Kickstarter, as he has with other projects, and is asking fans to donate, so that they will receive some incredible and original Datahowler material.

Here’s how Datahowler introduces the page…

“If this is your first time hearing of me, let me introduce myself. My name is Datahowler / Ross Edman. I am a musician, designer, producer and philosopher. I love to build things and make products. My main love is music though. Datahowler is an electronic project I started 2 years ago that was an outlet for all of these passions. My first album, Slowdrifter, was successfully funded through Kickstarter in January 2011 and since then I have been creating non stop.”

I must say, Slowdrifter is a very good album indeed. If the new one is as good as Slowdrifter, then we’re all in for some good music. The album preview is also available on the site, and I enjoyed it immensely, although it’s just a preview so I can’t judge it entirely yet. But, judging on his past work, and also on the preview track, it does sound like this one might likely be a fine and enjoyable ride!

Datahowler Has a New Album, New Art, and, Best of All, New Terrariums

Five dollars gets you the album (as well as ‘Extra Unreleased Singles,’) but you can, of course, contribute more, if you are so willing. You can get your hands on even more of his music projects, stickers, terrariums he’s personally made, and even a hand-made book of a ton of his awesome drawings.

Go to the Kickstarter site for more details. Always exciting to see the output of someone involved in music as well as physical art.

Datahowler is one prolific motherfucker, and I’ll be following his career for some time, as it’s pretty clear, at this point, that this guy’s mind is working overtime, and is definitely bringing some clever and unique ideas into the world.

Datahowler Has a New Album, New Art, and, Best of All, New Terrariums

If you spend $500 or more, Datahowler promises, among other things, that:

“I will come set up my projector and play at your house and mix drinks and even play rare cuts from my record collection. I’ll wear a suit and entertain you with my non-jokes. I can even bring my philosophy books over and we can get weird. *This does not include travel outside of DFW area or North Texas.”

Couldn’t find any videos of the new one available to embed, so I decided to just throw up this slightly older video of the dude, playing his classic tune, “Multiverse,” in what he calls one of his Violinist Sessions. It shows him playing some of his trademark grooves, and it’s pretty damn fun to watch. Again, this is not off the new one, to my knowledge, but it’s a good one, nonetheless, and will give you an idea about some of what this unique and origianl creativity-junkie has to offer…

Cheers, Data!

StrangeFlow's Juke Tutorial

I hope this video was helpful, I made this beat tut for the electronic musician who is determined to learn how to make a juke beat but doesn’t know how to start.

Also, like I pointed out in the video, there are TONS of incredible Chicago juke tracks out there, and I was recommend inundating yourself with them as much as possible if you’re thinking about making any kind of juke music.

Also, check out the footwerk (or footwork) (or footwurk) videos here on youtube. I promise, some of them will blow your mind. Thanks, and happy mixing!

One Hundred Wonky Beats

Clocking in @ a cool 106 BPM , it's one hundred downtempo wonky beats, by StrangeFlow

click for One Hundred Wonky

So I put together a collection of the most wonkinest beats around. And, until Schlomo or Hudson Mohawke release something similar, this’ll be your best bet at getting some quality wonky beats.

You can get the product here OR click on the download link above!

For more information on this lovely package… Check out the demo pack I’ve constructed. It’s got a small selection of tracks (FROM THE WONKY BEATS PACK!!) and they’ll give you an idea about what’s in this product…

And now, some information about this One Hundred Wonky Beats product:

Scientists have recently conlcuded that 106 BPM has the most potential for wonkyness, compared to any other BPM in the entirety of sound.
Therefor, I felt it was my duty, scientifically, to construct 100 original wonky beats, all at 106 bpm.

These beats are crumpled up, ripped in half, stubborn, and wonkiliciously funky. They borrow from the ‘offbeat’ sound made popular by Flying Lotus, Dilla, Samiyam, and Mike Slott. Utilizing a variety of influences (including funk, gabber, grime, purple, glitch hop, and hip hop) this pack has some very fun beat samples in it. I had LOTS of fun with these beats, as wonky is my favorite genre. Or… subgenre, or whatever.

I used to host The Wonky Underground radio show on Glitch.FM for awhile, and have also made a lot of decently wonky tunes, and I feel like I have a strong sense of what it means to make a wonky beat. I don’t mean to overstate the case, but remember, this is for science, afterall!

Also, I’d like to point out something I noticed when I was doing the final proofing for these beats… Aside from putting them into new tracks, they’re also quite fun to just put into a playlist and listen to them all at once. It’s like one huge, constantly-evolving wonky soundtrack.

Also, I think “beat 47” is my favorite.

Well, anyway, I guess that’s about it! I hope you enjoy these weird and wonky grooves!

-StrangeFlow

All the beats are original, sequenced, and ready to load into any music programs that are capable of loading .WAV files.

Capable with:

Acid Pro
Ableton Live
Propellerhead Reason
Logic
Recycle

Until the Quiet Comes by Flying Lotus

Until the Quiet Comes by Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus’ new one, Until the Quiet Comes

Lovely. Once again, Flying Lotus has a new album out, and it’s a good one. If you’re a fan of this musical genius, or if you’re a fan of good music in general, you might want to go and pick this one up. It’s colorful with the melody, contains a few incredibly soulful vocal tunes, and has a really fun flow, overall.

As some people have been pointing out – yes, there are some trapped-out tracks in this one. It’s not exactly Wacka Flacka or Flosstradamus, though; but it’s what you’d probably expect if someone told you, “hey, Flying Lotus made some trap music.” What I mean by that is that, although there are definitely some 808 style trap rhythms in some of the album, the Lotus musical persona still shrines through, as he gives his own take on the style, with his unique trademark abstract-soul sound shining through strong. I will say, also, that the tune ‘Putty Boy Strut,’ conjures up images (for me, anyway) of a bunch of teddy bears robbing a bank.

‘Electric Candyman’ is a song on the album that features Thom Yorke. It’s very interesting. The track opens up with what sounds like a broken box of new wave synth tunes; which eventually gives way to some dreamy / spacey atmospherics, and a nice bass guitar and the sounds of a live drummer, along with Thom Yorke’s vocals coating the whole outfit with some non-lyrical singing… kind of a shoegazey ordeal, in a way, with the technique of using the human voice box as an instrument… and it works.

FlyLo also works with Niki Randa on a couple of tracks, as well as Laura Darlington, and also – oooh, and also! – Erykah Badu is on the album! She sings for the tune See Thru U. I’m very excited about this one, too. If you can’t tell, I’m pretty damn excited about the whole album, actually. I can personally guarantee I’ll be listening to this LP over and over and over and over again.

You can hear a live-streaming of it over at NPR.

I don’t know, at this point, which track is my favorite… But I will say, the tune, ‘Heave(n)’ is one of my favorites. Starts out in jazzy territory, and then harks back to Fly’s unique breakbeat sound, also presenting some fine color and soul. It feels like a transition track. A lot of them do, actually. A lot of musical ideas are put into each of his releases, and getting through all of his musical thoughts and experiments sometimes make the tunes feel like ‘transitions’ because a tune might start in one area and end up in much different territory. That’s not to say that it’s an inconsistent flow, however; he builds a range and then flies you through it, showing you everything it has to offer. It’s breezy, exciting, and very blissful.

Here’s a video for ‘Putty Boy Strut’

Props for the new one!

Top Ten Trap Songs!

Hooray! Another Bassadelic Top Ten! This time, we’re keepin’ shit trappin hard with a Top Ten Trap Songs post! :) Hope ya guys enjoy it! If you’re a fan of EDM Trap shit, this is something I think you’ll enjoy :)

10.) OG Status – Strictly Business

09.) ΣnΘ☪К☬SΔ£Ø – MELT

My favorite comment on this one, on the 710 Records soundcloud page where I loaded this song from, is a comment someone wrote, saying this song is “fucking (.Y.) Sauce!” Ha. Never heard that one. Interesting :) Anyway if you haven’t heard, Bleep Bloop, the creator of 710 Records, put out a slammin’ 40-track trap compilation. This was just before trap music fuckin exploded. It’s really fucking fun, and it was the first I heard of the modern EDM-ish trap stuff, and I definitely recommend that.

08.) ƱZ x CRNKN – Booty 2 The Ground ︻╦╤─ ₣ЯЄЄ ƉОШИⱢØ∆Đ

07.) The Partysquad ft. Alvaro – Badman (Luminox Remix)

This one is really fucking fun… I especially love the hint of gabber interlaced in the rhythm. This remix has a bit of everything, it seems.

06.) Craze & Codes – “Trapped In Sydney”

Reaaally likin’ this one. From a former turntablist, no less! Craze does really fun stuff. This one’s gangsta as hell, too :)

05.) +VERB – TRAPTORADE (BLEEP BLOOP REMIX)

Gotta give props to a couple awesome folks I know from Glitch Hop Forum, +Verb and Bleep Bloop (da muh-fuggin trap reverend!) This one’s great. I love the melodies on it, as well.

04.) Comma – Twegionaire

03.) ƱZ – “ŤɌ∆Ҏ ᶊῌῗ† √9″

Yep, another one with ƱZ. Dude’s a champion. Whomever he is. Dude’s a champion as well as a mystery.

02.) Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says

Apologies for the format inconsistencies, some are soundcloud links, and a couple of these are youtube videos, but, well, such is the internet, at the moment. Until someone invents a StrangeFlowTube.GOV and completely squashed youtube, I’m not sure what’s to be done. And, I mean, of course it would be something like StrangeFlowTube.GOV, because… well, what else would it be called?

Anyway, jokes aside, here’s some more trap… You ready for number one? You fucking ready???

01.) Flosstradamus – Roll Up

I know this is like the 8th time I’ve posted this link somewhere online, in pure praise and admiration for this track and the artist duo known as Flosstradamus. Great stuff. I can’t get enough of this one. If they make a bass’d out trap movie, this should be the title track on the soundtrack.
