The ‘Golden Age’ OF the Golden Age of Rave Continues with Another Awesome Rave Mixtape Website… Yea, clever title, eh? …no??? Well.. Well, I thought so! Ah well, you keep your opinion, I’ll keep making shitty puns.. ;)
Point is, I just found a site that’s been around for more than a miiiinute (R.I.P. MARTEZ) and this site has a category of years to choose from, genres to choose from, and speaking of Martez a second ago, I gaurantee he would love this site. He was a friend of mine was ALL about the rave scene, pre-EDM era. He loved happy hardcore, especially. Anyway, I don’t have a 40 to spill a bit in his honor (no sarcasm intended) so here’s this site, instead.
mixtapes.demodulated.com/ (plus there’s lots of other mixtape sites down the page near the bottom…)
There are other sites. And if anyone wants to send me any, I’ll do my best post em.
The first line on the site was something I felt like I just had to post, I think it shows the dude’s sincerity in running a blog like this. And I have no problem sending love to fellow electronic-heads:
What is a mixtape? It’s an hour or so of a person’s life recorded for posterity.
It’s so fucking true.
I’m just gonna’ fucking quote the rest of the page. Fuck it, you can feel the dude’s love of old school rave and the extreme PLUR-mentality. He’s doing his best, IMO, to keep that PLUR ALIVE! We need that, so much, right now…
What is mixtape culture? Simply put, mixtape culture is a subset of people who enjoy compiling the things they love into a portable package and giving it away freely, or selling it cheaply for promotional purposes. Before the internet became widespread mixtapes were given to friends who made copies for friends who made copies of the copies. Quality degraded with every iteration but the love of the music and sharing was enough for this culture to flourish.
As practical and wonderful as the internet has become, the ease of self-publication has nearly caused the extinction of the face-to-face mixtape hand-off. This is both a blessing and a curse because although the internet enables proliferation on a mass scale, it forgoes the simple joy of placing something important into the hands of a friend.
It is in this spirit that I’ve decided to make much of my techno mixtape collection freely available. I hope you will download and enjoy many mixes, and invite your friends to do the same.
The site also introduced me to a phrase I’d never heard before: Kopimi…
“kopimi (copyme), symbol showing that you want to be copied.” Apparently, there are a lot of different variations, and you can make your own. That’s probably half the fun! Here are a few:
Ook, ok, that last one is just some ecstacy… It caught my eye when I was looking on my hard drive for the images I just downloaded… It’s just a photo… Anyway , if you click on the photos, you go straight to the copy-me-page. Hmm. I learned a new concept today. Should I kill that information with a bit of smoking? Hmm… A tough question… Well.. I’ll wait till later tonight to decide (again, I mentioned Martez earlier, and I KNOW what his answer what be: “DO IT UP, DUUUUUDE!”) Ahh, he really was rave-incarnate.
….
Is THIS ALL I GOT?? FFS! Thousands of hours of rave and an introduction to a new interesting possibly-anarchistic-internet-sharing-symbol? That’s not enough??!!
..OK. Fine! Fucking fine! Here’s a bunch of other mixtape sites for ya. (I also got a mixtape page up in the tabs section, go to the music and then click on mixtapes… I got that shit, too.. But I’m not just trying to hype myself, there’s LOTS of love to go around, so here are fucking 100s of thousands of hours of rave. This should keep you good for a miiiiinute:

So it’s awesome raging out to big bass trax, but what about afterwards when you’re like, “Oh my god, that was great but now I need to just chill…,” what then?
Here – Will Herwig from his youtube page has got you covered. It even opens with the best Flying Lotus track ever (IMO, anyway) and the whole thing is just a stone cold slow-down-groove-mix…. Stuff that might’ve been called wonky (I would’ve called a lot of it that, a few years ago) but it’s so slowed and chilled, I don’t know.. Anyway, whatever the hell it’s called, it’s chill, it’s got mellow breaks and nice ambience, and it’s great for chilling out or even falling asleep, if so desired::::: (and if you look below the video, there’s a dl link that the dude put up, too. Thank, Wil Herwig, you masterful motherfucker!)
Here you go, have it on your phone or wherever: http://dl.soundowl.com/4qhn.mp3
Hey hey, the dude also has a mix of XXYYXX. If you haven’t heard of XXYYXX by now, here:

So, a little bit of information. Abstracker is a great musician/DJ, its true – but he’s also a contributor for Bassadelic.com! He recently wrote a terrific article about the French Glitch Wave; an incredily informative and fun article about some of the new electronic music to hit Europe. MC2 is a name that stuck out, from his article. MC2 is the duo that uses joysticks plugged into synths and laptops and rock out MUCH harder than a Glitch Mob (yea, seriously!) does.
So, if it weren’t for this guy, I wouldn’t even know who the hell MC2 was. Also, Abstracker spins a great set! Here’s his mixtape, for Bassadelic, this month – (and its got some real dope tunes on it, from Freddy Todd to MC2 to Flatmate! Glitch Hop from two continents! (Now we just need to turn on the other five continents… And yes, I’m counting that continent with nothing but penguins. We need to get penguins glitchin’ out hardcore:
tracklist:
Freddy Todd – Triple Entendre
Mustard Tiger – MudBrick
CloZee – Raging Strings
MC2 – French Boulette
MC2 – Algeria
R.O – Mad Savant
AMB – Duck Club
Pistol Shrimp – Gravity (Parsifal remix)
Freddy Todd – Gather Masters
Stayin’ Alive (K Theory & TYR remix)
Flatmate – Corn Flex
Skope – RoboFunk
And, its good to point out that this guy is not just a DJ but also a very talented musician. I found this one on his page (among others) and its a fun groove:
So, people seemed to enjoy another post I did on Bassadelic (“Debruit is a Motherfucking Champion”) so I thought I’d do another one. This time, it’s Kenlo Craqnuques. This guy makes some of the best breaks, period.
I have been a fan of his for awhile now, and I always made sure to drop some dope Kenlo gems into my sets when I hosted the Wonky Underground last year. If you’re a fan of wonky music, downtempo, hip hop, or just good ol’ sample-heavy grooves, you might want to check this dude out.
His stuff reminds me of Dilla. Oh, and also, you can a lot of his stuff for FREE… Those two points alone should be enough to get a lot of folks interested, but if not, I’ll continue! :) His mixtapes are dope as fuck, and, earlier this year, he came out with an official release, ‘Cailloux Germés’, which you can download here for free.
First, here are some link love…
Grab seven awesome beat tapes by Kenlo here. Yea, that’s right, 7 complete tapes… as in, this guy is super prolific!
I found the following write up over at the Error Broadcast site which is where he’s releasing his first official album….
“From across the big waters we are delighted to welcome KenLo Craqnuques in the bosom of the Error Broadcast family. This Africa-born, Montreal-based beat conductor blessed the scene with five beat tapes and just recently debuted under his all-digital moniker Qwerty Musique. He has two tapes with fellow producer Vlooper and kicks a rhyme every once a while. “Cailloux Germés” is the first official KenLo Craqnuques release.
“Stand out amongst the flood of new producers, KenLo Craqnuques manages to inject a huge amount of classic Soul and Boom Bap Rap into his hypermodern beats. His songs breathe the history of Black Music without looking back. What has been true ever since “Noir” is eventually obvious on “Cailloux Germés”: the Craqnuques music pushes the borders of 21. Century beat music. Real big.”
– Error Broadcast
The one I posted above is called, “Copporn,” and its from his Noir and it is definitely one of my favorites. I’ve found that I can listen to Kenlo’s grooves in a variety of situations. Its great when you’re chilling with your friends; its great when you’re by yourself. It’s good when you’re trying to relax, and even better when you’re already chill. Basically, its always good.
The three tunes in the youtube video above are from, ‘Bleu,’ and they are, “Wong”, “Wheels” & “Crizzack” and I think “Wheels” is, so far, my favorite.
Some of these beat tapes are great, and, in my opinion, have an aesthetic that reminds me of something visual… When I listen to to a beat tape by Kenlo, the tracks feel like moments that have been painted on a canvas. You enjoy each one, and then, as soon as the moment and the groove is established, the next song comes in. I like that. If any track you’re enjoying isn’t long enough, you just play it again. I’ve played some of these over and over and over again – unlike the other 90% of musicians on the planet, Kenlo makes an instrumental that is NEVER too long. Ever.
This one’s called, “Floorscraper,” from ‘Orange’. Also an incredible tune to set the vibe.
So, about that official album, ‘Cailloux Germés’, you can listen to it below, and download it for free, and if you dig it, I recommend dropping the dude a couple bucks so that he can keep banging out some of the dopest breaks I’ve ever heard! Put this album on at a party and just wait for people to ask, “What is this? It’s fucking good!”
So that’s about it for now. Kenlo Craqnuques is definitely a motherfucking champion, and his music deserves a lot more hype. I hope you enjoyed some of these beats. Just writing this post was very enjoyable for me! :)
Oh, yes, and before I go, let me continue the tradition I started with the other “..Is A Motherfucking Champion” article, and put a picture of a pin-up model holding onto a record, into this article, before I leave. Enjoy.
