Making Yourself Hungry

Making Yourself Hungry - an article about bread & circuses, motivation, and self-bribery... from the new ebook by StrangeFlow!

The following article is taken from a chapter in a new book I’m planning to release soon. The book is about cultivating a creative and productive mindset, and using this productivity towards creating great value to share with the world, and, in turn, funding future projects through that value. It’s a book full of interesting techniques and ideas, and some very worthwhile creative method that I know (from experience) works. So, I’m looking forward to that, and I hope you’ll check it out when the time comes!

Now, on to the article…

There’s an old phrase that goes back hundreds of years – panem et circenses. It translates, from Latin, to, ‘bread and circuses.’ It basically refers to frivolous distractions, and was used to describe the diversion process that political leaders can use (and definitely still do today) to keep their people opiated. Give the people trivial pleasures and useless, shortsighted distractions, and you’ll be amazed at how fast a populace is willing to pre-divide and pre-conquer itself.

It’s so easy to not get things done; we invest in apathy all the time. Apathy can come in many forms – social apathy, civic or political apathy, financial apathy, – but, seeing as this site is about reaching your creative goals, I’m going to talk a little bit about that kind.

When I read about the big ‘movers and shakers’ from ‘yesteryear,’ either Thomas Edison or Leonardo da Vinci… (or that character Marky Mark played in Boogie Nights… ) I always noticed how they never seemed to have a ton of distractions in their lives, materially (at least in the beginning). They would work hard, conquer adversity, and become world famous. They’d win. Then, after I finished the book, or the biographical movie, or whatever the format, I would reflect on my own life and think about how spoiled I was compared to these old champions – all the easy access I have to tools that make my life more fun – all the episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Boardwalk Empire I’ve downloaded and could easily watch, at the click of a mouse – and I’ll look around and notice that most of my friends are in a similar boat.

It’s not like you have to be rich to have distractions, either, which… probably makes the whole thing worse, if you think about it… It’s as if we’re constantly being invited to live in some weird post-success landscape of mediocre passtimes with no ultimate value…

“Of course the folks from decades or centuries ago could get themselves off their feet and find success,” you might say, “there was literally nothing else to do!”

Fair enough..

Ok, I’m not saying that you should throw away every DVD you have or cancel Netflix, but what I am saying is that, at least for a time, it can be EXTREMELY productive to unplug from the world of distractions, so that you might be more productive and creative when you’re forced to fill your time with your own thoughts and ideas. I know, for many, this can be difficult, if you have a job that you come home from and only have a couple of hours before bed… But if you prioritize and set a goal to manage your time, you’ll find that there’s probably SOME free time you can readily devote to this ‘unplugging.’
Now, when I say unplugging, I want to be clear that I’m not talking about going into a forest for a year; or chanting ohms in a cave, or eliminating modern technology from your life altogether. I’m not asking that you necessarily become an monk or a hippie. I’m just pointing out that it can be a good practice to eliminate (at least, temporarily) the bread and circuses in your life, and force yourself to get some of the things you wrote down on your to-do list this from morning.

You might feel strange, cutting yourself off (I know I felt strange when I first start trying to avoid TV) but you need to think about it in the long run, not just the short run. Here’s an exercise – next time you’re committed to becoming productive and want to really get going on one of your goals, and something else comes up – a fun (but possibly trivial) distraction, ask yourself – out loud – the following phrase (it can help to verbalize your ideas whenever possible, as it subconsciously makes them seem more ‘real’): “If I do X Activity, will it help me out with my long term goals, or just help me pass the time TODAY?”

Now, when I say, ‘long term,’ I’m not necessarily talking about 50 years from now, but I’m certainly trying to help steer you away from the ol’ TMFN (“ten minutes from now”) style of thinking that many (myself included) have gotten used to in this panem et circenses society that we find ourselves in.

Turn off distractions, consider the long term, and make yourself hungry. Stop merely consuming, and start producing. How are you going to get hungry enough to create anything of value if you have dozens of immediate-satisfaction-inducing experiences all around you, all the time, forever? It’s no way to create passion for a hobby, goal, business, or even basic fulfillment, that’s for damn sure. You need to make yourself hungry, insanely hungry; it’s a mental state you want to foster in yourself.

Ok, so after you take in all the previous ideas laid out concerning why it is good to get away from distractions, let me go back and contradict myself a tiny bit for a moment and say that distractions CAN be a good thing, if used right. As with most things in life, it is all about context. Using short term pleasures can be a good reward after a productive day/session. In fact, if you can discipline yourself enough, I completely recommend using trivial passtimes as a carrot on a string (even though I hate the phrase, ‘carrot on a string’) to get you to finish that last un-fun task on your list that you’ve been putting off the whole day.

How to Make a Beastie Boys Album!

How to Make a Beastie Boys Album! Audio Commentary FROM THE SOURCE!!!

So, have you ever wanted to know what the story was with (my favorite Beastie Boys album) Check Your Head? What was the story behind that ‘Watcha Want’ track? Actually, it probably not what you’d think.. Take a listen to the audio commentary here, and learn what the Beastie Boys were upto during the recording process of their best albums. You’ll learn, straight from the source, what the deal is.

I found these videos because of a good friend of mine, Madeline New, who was kind to enough to point in this direction. I thought I’d share these vidoes, they’re a lot of fun to listen to if you’re a longtime fan of the Beastie Boys. Or, for any modern electronic / hip hop music producer, at all; you really get a comprehensive sense of how all the songs were made, and what was involved in the process.

The Beastie Boys had a huge impact on me, and I know they had a hug impact on a lot of folks out there, as well. A whole generation grew up listening to them. I credit them with being the group that got me into hip hop (as far as listening – as well as in my music production)!

So they are, a handful of Beastie Boys gems! Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty. Please enjoy. I guarentee you will learn a lot from these!

Paul’s Boutique

Check Your Head

Ill Communication

Hello Nasty

I hope these videos help give insight into one of the dopest hip hop groups in history!

Abstracker's Free Mixtape for Bassadelic! Big on French Glitch Hop, Check it Out! It's FREE and Wonderful!

So, a little bit of information. Abstracker is a great musician/DJ, its true – but he’s also a contributor for Bassadelic.com! He recently wrote a terrific article about the French Glitch Wave; an incredily informative and fun article about some of the new electronic music to hit Europe. MC2 is a name that stuck out, from his article. MC2 is the duo that uses joysticks plugged into synths and laptops and rock out MUCH harder than a Glitch Mob (yea, seriously!) does.

So, if it weren’t for this guy, I wouldn’t even know who the hell MC2 was. Also, Abstracker spins a great set! Here’s his mixtape, for Bassadelic, this month – (and its got some real dope tunes on it, from Freddy Todd to MC2 to Flatmate! Glitch Hop from two continents! (Now we just need to turn on the other five continents… And yes, I’m counting that continent with nothing but penguins. We need to get penguins glitchin’ out hardcore:

tracklist:

Freddy Todd – Triple Entendre
Mustard Tiger – MudBrick
CloZee – Raging Strings
MC2 – French Boulette
MC2 – Algeria
R.O – Mad Savant
AMB – Duck Club
Pistol Shrimp – Gravity (Parsifal remix)
Freddy Todd – Gather Masters
Stayin’ Alive (K Theory & TYR remix)
Flatmate – Corn Flex
Skope – RoboFunk

And, its good to point out that this guy is not just a DJ but also a very talented musician. I found this one on his page (among others) and its a fun groove:

Kenlo is a Motherfucking Champion

Kenlo is a Motherfucking Champion

So, people seemed to enjoy another post I did on Bassadelic (“Debruit is a Motherfucking Champion”) so I thought I’d do another one. This time, it’s Kenlo Craqnuques. This guy makes some of the best breaks, period.

I have been a fan of his for awhile now, and I always made sure to drop some dope Kenlo gems into my sets when I hosted the Wonky Underground last year. If you’re a fan of wonky music, downtempo, hip hop, or just good ol’ sample-heavy grooves, you might want to check this dude out.

His stuff reminds me of Dilla. Oh, and also, you can a lot of his stuff for FREE… Those two points alone should be enough to get a lot of folks interested, but if not, I’ll continue! :) His mixtapes are dope as fuck, and, earlier this year, he came out with an official release, ‘Cailloux Germés’, which you can download here for free.

First, here are some link love…

Kenlo’s Bandcamp page

Kenlo’s Myspace Page

Grab seven awesome beat tapes by Kenlo here. Yea, that’s right, 7 complete tapes… as in, this guy is super prolific!

I found the following write up over at the Error Broadcast site which is where he’s releasing his first official album….

“From across the big waters we are delighted to welcome KenLo Craqnuques in the bosom of the Error Broadcast family. This Africa-born, Montreal-based beat conductor blessed the scene with five beat tapes and just recently debuted under his all-digital moniker Qwerty Musique. He has two tapes with fellow producer Vlooper and kicks a rhyme every once a while. “Cailloux Germés” is the first official KenLo Craqnuques release.

“Stand out amongst the flood of new producers, KenLo Craqnuques manages to inject a huge amount of classic Soul and Boom Bap Rap into his hypermodern beats. His songs breathe the history of Black Music without looking back. What has been true ever since “Noir” is eventually obvious on “Cailloux Germés”: the Craqnuques music pushes the borders of 21. Century beat music. Real big.”

– Error Broadcast

The one I posted above is called, “Copporn,” and its from his Noir and it is definitely one of my favorites. I’ve found that I can listen to Kenlo’s grooves in a variety of situations. Its great when you’re chilling with your friends; its great when you’re by yourself. It’s good when you’re trying to relax, and even better when you’re already chill. Basically, its always good.

The three tunes in the youtube video above are from, ‘Bleu,’ and they are, “Wong”, “Wheels” & “Crizzack” and I think “Wheels” is, so far, my favorite.

Some of these beat tapes are great, and, in my opinion, have an aesthetic that reminds me of something visual… When I listen to to a beat tape by Kenlo, the tracks feel like moments that have been painted on a canvas. You enjoy each one, and then, as soon as the moment and the groove is established, the next song comes in. I like that. If any track you’re enjoying isn’t long enough, you just play it again. I’ve played some of these over and over and over again – unlike the other 90% of musicians on the planet, Kenlo makes an instrumental that is NEVER too long. Ever.

This one’s called, “Floorscraper,” from ‘Orange’. Also an incredible tune to set the vibe.

So, about that official album, ‘Cailloux Germés’, you can listen to it below, and download it for free, and if you dig it, I recommend dropping the dude a couple bucks so that he can keep banging out some of the dopest breaks I’ve ever heard! Put this album on at a party and just wait for people to ask, “What is this? It’s fucking good!”

So that’s about it for now. Kenlo Craqnuques is definitely a motherfucking champion, and his music deserves a lot more hype. I hope you enjoyed some of these beats. Just writing this post was very enjoyable for me! :)

Oh, yes, and before I go, let me continue the tradition I started with the other “..Is A Motherfucking Champion” article, and put a picture of a pin-up model holding onto a record, into this article, before I leave. Enjoy.

50s pretty pin up model wearing skirt, looking through vinyl recods, I bet she's looking at that new StrangeFlow record!

Yuri Cheats, Wins, Chrews & Screws Opiuo (All for Dewey)

Yuri Cheats, Dewey Cheers, Opiuo Gets Chewed & Screwed

Well, Dewey DB, of Glitch Hop Forum fame, decided to run a competition. The Glitch Hop Forum Competition. It was a major success, and everyone loved it. Well, about one year passed, and Dewey decided to do another competition, and this time, the theme would be, ‘Field Recording.’ The problem, however, was that many folks seemed to not understand what that meant. Many of the more basic rules were misinterpreted, for whatever reason, and Dewey didn’t know what to do.

He decided to ask Yuri to step in and help out. Well, Yuri happily obliged, and gave Dewey this video..

Yuri invents his own sort of remix style, of which he calls ‘chewed & screwed,’ and he ‘performs’ it on an Opiuo track – “Monkey Crunk.”

Let Yuri know if you have any video suggestions for him! From saving glitch hop competitions to holding several world records for fastest beat (in virtually every genre category imaginable) the titan known as Yuri is always down for a video.

How to Swang Out the Beats (StrangeFlow’s 2nd Electro Swing Tutorial)

Strangeflow's Guide to Swangin' Out the Beat! Plus, Another Electro Swing Remix Tutorial For Ya!

Received a couple questions about my first electro swing tutorial, so I thought I’d make another video, to try to clarify some things a little bit, as I want to encourage people to ask questions :)

Getting that swingin’ beat can be difficult at first, but with practice, it’s very do-able.

The trick is just to have the second half of a beat pushed as far to the end of the beat as possible, and not necessarily quantizing it to any half or quarter notes.. I’m talking about sequencing, when I say that. If you have a beat that plays, and then repeats, imagine that the second half of the beat is almost ready to jump into the second looping of that beat.

Here’s an example to show you what the hell I’m talking about..

sequencing

So, you see in the first row, in the image above (with each Strangeflow-with-goofy-cap ICON representing a drum sample – in this case, let’s say its just a kick drum) – do you see how there’s a StrangeFlow head (kick) on the 1, 3, 5 & 7? That’s the basic 4/4 beat. It’s what’s expected from a techno beat, electro, house, etc… And yes, there should also be snares or claps or hats, but for right now, for the basics, I’m just talking bass kicks…

The second row is much more swung out, meaning…what? Look at the StrangeFlow heads, this time. He’s still on the 1 and the 5, and still has a stupid cap on, but instead of being on the 3, he’s sorta… closer to the 4, right? And then, closer to the 8, eh? He’s not perfectly quantized. He’s just a little bit swung out…

I really encourage you to try it for yourself. Just get any kick drums. Anything. Whatever 808 or 909 kick drums you have. Or, sample something. Just for a test. Try it out until you feel you’ve got a swing.

For a second test, you could make the note (the StrangeFlow head on the 3 and the 7) into snares, and then let the heads on 1 and 5 remain as bass kicks.

Go ahead and try it out, see what you get. The thing is, it’s weird at first, but after awhile, with a bit of patience, you can get it. The closer the second drum kick is to the end of the 4 (or, the end of the 8) the more ‘swung’ out it is.

Here’s another electro swing tutorial I did, to further clarify what I’ve just talked about, and also to incorporate it into a remix of a Paul Whiteman tune!

This video clears up a question about what kick drums to use for electro swing remixes, and also shows StrangeFlow manually swanging the beats out hard, and mapping it to a big band swing tune!

Also, one last thing to point out is that the there will be a second Authentic Electro Swing Samples pack coming out soon! There have been a lot of packages coming along, here at Bassadelic, and we our excited for the next couple of months!

Stay tuned! And, I hope you enjoy the video and learn a little more about swangin’ out those beats! Once you really get how to do it, you’ll see how much fucking fun it really is! :) :)
